rainman, If you really want to go somewhere why not verbier only an hour away via valorcine and the col montets which is usually open unless there has been a lot of snow recently.

brock, thanks, but it's not so much the idea of going somewhere else that's appealing (after all, CHX has more than enough to keep us interested for four days), than the opportunity to go to ITALY for a day. And do so with very little effort.
So, to sum up- fings wot I have learned:
Book a car on the Swiss side as it's easier, faster and could be cheaper.
A day in Courmayeur recommended by most as a decent day trip from Chamonix. And we can have some decent food on the mountain.
Get guide and do the VB.
Drop into the SMZ's place and I will be offered beer, pies, possibly some skis to test and an opportunity to buy some expertly fitted orange boots.
