My knee is now looking happier - only slight swelling after exercise - waking (slowly) without crutches - stairs up ok, down are still tough - no bike or driving yet but much more mobile than last week.

Idris It's looking good. Here's mine. I had steri-strips so there are no stitch tram lines. It still swells if I over do things, but quickly responds to ice & elevation

Not such a good day yesterday, due to knee being quite swollen - probably because I slept in an awkward position again. But it's good again today, so I guess that's just the way it goes. I've been wearing leggings due to my leg feeling like it needs something on it, but as it was hot today, I was pottering in the garden in bare legs - I was quite surprised to find an increase in lack of proprioception until the leggings went on again - strange

genepi, I wear compression tights for all exercise, and I too - without any specific knee injury - feel strangely wobbly when I'm not wearing them.

genepi, Jonathan bell gave a good explanation about that in another thread.... To do with the brain using the feedback from the surround support to make up for what it doesn't get from the internal muscles (I am sure I have reguertated that badly).

Pedantica, NickyJ, OK , thanks. I'm seeing him on Tuesday, anyway. I'm not worried about it, it was just rather strange, that's all.

pam w, I got some 3/4 gym bottoms - like cycling shorts but without the padding. I had been wearing trousers before, but like you couldn't see if my knee was straight. I love the compression effect of the gym bottoms and my physio said they were much better for leg work (wish he had mentioned it sooner!)

Good one genepi, I'm up to maybe 2 or 3km of walking at a time, I have a hinged brace at the moment for when I'm going to walk more than 100m or so. Like you I am also very slow, at least downhill, even slightly less than flat I'm affected, but uphill I can work up a sweat without the knee getting upset
My big change freedom wise this week was being allowed to drive - over did that a bit by going to Annecy and back (220km round trip) - Knee and Physio a bit grumpy after that.
How are you getting on felxion wise. I can get my leg straigh (but not hyperextended) and about 125 at the moment.

I was allowed to drive at either 4 weeks post op. Though I did get an automatic hire car for the first month or so after going back to work, for long work journeys (company funded) as it was my clutch leg.

I thought I'd check in to see how the newest ACL club members were doing, as today was the day that the cows went up to their summer home: this time two years ago I was feeling pretty miffed that I couldn't do the walk up with everyone else and have the cheese and wine at the mountaintop farm (as it turns out I couldn't do it this year, or the last either, as we had a lot of guests in both times).
genepi you sound like you're doing so well! As I said before, I'm sure you've been able to go downstairs far more quickly than I could - I got to the point when I was wondering whether I'd ever be able to do that normally again (and then one day it just happened). I'm intrigued by the fact that you've been given a hinged brace for 100m+ walks Idris - is that standard protocol from your surgeon/physio?

I'm supposed to wear it whenever I'm walking, the physio doesn't mind (Too much) if I walk less then 100m without the brace - and yes they are standar protocol, from both my physio and surgeon. Although it is a short term thing I'm told to bridge the gap between the need to have a ridgid brace and having enough strenght/stability to walk without - If I lived on the ground floor, in a non hilly place and didn't drive I probably wouldn't need the brace at the moment.

Idris, It's interesting to see the different approaches, isn't it? Do you feel unstable without the brace?

Yes it is, I see many differences between my freinds here in Chamonix also
As for the brace, No I don't feel unstabel without it, but then again everything here is sloped or potholled or both, the only flat smooth bits are full of sitesiing tourists, so fo rthe moment I'm happy with the brace for protection.
As soon as I'm alowed I will be without it, as I feel my motion is much ore free and smooth.

Idris, I know where you are coming from! My son lives in Chamonix, & I remember visiting him a couple of years ago, about a month after I'd injured my knee the 2nd time & it was still very unstable. I had to resort to crutches to get around! Not very user friendly for knee rehab, is it? I had to get from his flat to the swimming pool, which subsequently I discovered was no distance at all, but at the time seemed miles. Glad you are getting on well

Idris, That all sounds good - I'm glad it's going well. I had my follow up yesterday - quite a day, saw my physio, then Jonathan Bell's physio prior to seeing the man himself. They are all pleased with my progress. Like you, I have loads of squats, but I'm quite pleased to say that I haven't progressed to hopping yet, as just the thought of that makes me wince! I'm doing a fair bit of walking now (2 Labradors). At 16 weeks I'll have as hour long assessment with his physio to see if I'm ready for jogging.
