Poster: A snowHead
|
Just thought I would give fellow snowheads a heads up on this. Sorry if it is old news.
Just booked my trip with a UK company that has a French link. Prices were far cheaper on French site so I phoned to check.
Turns out UK site does not show latest Euro exchange rates but you can opt to pay in Euros, tiny button hidden in corner of website...just saved £100. If you are about to book probably worth checking, didn't work on Easyjet for flight though. Transfer from Geneva is also coming out £20 cheaper thanks to weak Euro. [/img]

Useful to know, thanks, but only if you name the company.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I decided not to name the company as they were a bit cagey about it as they did not want to upset all the people who booked early when rates were higher. Fair point I thought and it is a fairly small specialist company I like and have used for years, not one of the big tour operators, so do not want to cause them any grief.
It was really just a general comment for anyone booking with a company with foreign links to see if they had the option to pay in Euros. Hopefully anyone using this company will be able to work out who it is from the UK/French tie up and a French website in English. If anyone really wants to know I will be happy to PM them.

@Gaza, The thread actually prompted me to put off buying some clothing from Decathalon in the UK but to call into a French store and buy it.

@johnE - that is a very different thing. Dorset Andy said he had found a website where you could actually pay in Euros as opposed to Sterling. You are physically visiting a different country and are comparing the prices of items in UK and France; a sensible thing to do if the outlet has a presence and identical stock in different countries.
Retail pricing is likely to be fixed for a long period and fluctuations in exchange rates won't show through to local pricing. However, as they are fixed, buying in another country in the local currency can be beneficial if there has been a considerable movement in the exchange rate.

Only works if you can buy EUR at a better rate than the one offered by the vendor. If paying by credit card, then don't forget to factor in the Fx commission that most charge on top of the (usually) poor rate.

I got a great rate from my virgin credit card on Friday paying for the Foy apartment £1:€1.32 but have had to pay 2.75% non sterling transaction fee... Despite their prices having gone up €142 against the identical holiday last yr, I have however, saved £168 in total with the favourable exchange rates this year.

@Gaza. No problem, most of my posts are useless so I'm used to it.
I would just say all the tour operators are reaping the benefits of exchange rate movements at the moment. The company in question are actually passing on the saving to customers, they are just not shouting about it and I respect their wishes. I think I gave enough clues for those snowheads who know this company to work it out and like I said, if they really want to know I will PM them. No doubt there are other options to book direct with foreign operators and cut out the UK mainstream outfits who are profiteering from the current situation.
I went through the easyjet booking in both stirling and euros it is exactly the same process with euros being a couple of pounds more for some reason. "Booking Fee"? You haven't booked with EasyJet for a while have you?
Saving based on todays exchange rate quoted for my card and their very competitive fee.
Just keeping my fingers crossed that all this lovely new snow doesn't melt before I get there. Very jealous of some of the reports of waist deep powder for some of you lucky people.

@Dorset Andy, sorry blagging about "how to pay in euros and save money" and then say "they are not shouting about it and i respect their wishes" is frankly a load of tosh. It's the equivalent of saying
" i can get euros for 1.34, but i don't want to tell you because it wouldn't be fair to the fx provider"
I personally don't give a rats backside about saving a few quid right now as my major, ridiculously expensive family holiday is bought and paid for, but i think your post pretty much stinks even with the offer of a "PM teaser"
But i have had nearly 7 hours of driving today plus a full days work and the usual dog walk and other household admin either side of that so i could just be a real git....
