Do the Italians embrace the concept of Half Term?
If so does anyone happen to know when the one that interferes with the ski season in 2013 is scheduled for?
I am planning a trip to the Sella Ronda in Early March and would rather not be shown up by too many Italian kiddiwinks.

The Italians don't seem to do half terms (see http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=89192 for full holiday details). I've done a few trips to Italy during the UK half term and found it to be very quiet by comparison with France and Switzerland. That said I've never actually been to the Dolomites in winter.

red 27, There is a busy period, not sure if it is school holidays or not, in February each year for Carnevale. This often clashes with the peak UK half term.
I think it is around February 12th in 2013.

red 27, there are no defined national school holidays at half-term in Italy, New Year/Epiphany (Jan 6th) is to be avoided at all costs as it's absolutely rammed with Italian kids & Russians, as per the table:
http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=89192
Saying that, as CP said, different regions have time off around Carnevale, the Veneto region has a half-week to include Shrove Tuesday (Carnevale) & Ash Wednesday from the 10th to 13th February 2013
http://www.regione.veneto.it/Servizi+alla+Persona/Istruzione+e+Diritto+allo+Studio/Calendario+Scolastico+2012-2013.htm
The Trentino region has the 11th-12th Feb off and Alto Adige (South Tyrol) has a full week from 11th-16th Feb.

Also of concern for Val Gardena & Alta Badia are the German holidays as they are a big presence in these areas, but it looks like only Hamburg has holidays in March.
Early March can be a great time in the Dolomites, I've been twice at that time, good chance of fresh snowfall and some warm sunshine to enjoy outdoor lunches gazing at the views as Spring starts to arrive. It's always busiest on the Sella Ronda circuit, so just use that to get to the quieter areas and there are lots of them.

thanks all - I'm going for a cameo 4 day break, 3rd-7th March which seems like a good combo of peak season weather-wise and low season punter-wise.

It seems that for some - maybe a lot - of Italian resorts, especially those near big cities like Turin and Milan, the crowded times are every weekend with decent snow, with mid-weeks much quieter.

Too true pam w, resorts like Cervinia in NW Italy are like this and it certainly applies to smaller resorts in the Dolomites which are almost deserted midweek, but the Sella Ronda is mostly busy with week-long visitors.
The weekenders that show up don't make up for the loss of week-long visitors on changeover day, conspiring to make Saturday the quietest day of the week on the Sella Ronda.
