A man died a few hours ago after falling out of the Brevent/Planpraz gondola in Chamonix (France). Apparently, there were a number of people descending from the Planpraz ski area in the gondola, which was seen to be swaying considerably on the descent. It appears the men were messing around and pushing each other or trying to swing the gondola when one of them broke the window and fell into the couloir just above the Savoy learner slope....
Reports suggest he died on impact.
Note: this is being relayed from a colleaugue who's friend is a liftie and was in the gondola behind the above mentioned. This is not an official statement.

Very sad, but I've always felt the safest thing to do in those kind of cabins was sit as still as possible if the kids were indeed messing arround it looks like they've caused the death of one of their friends, a horrid thing to have to live with for the rest of their lives

Butterfly, We had the same discussion and decided the teenager must have gone through the doors, however the guy who saw it was certain it was through the window.

is that the very steep one that you can see the town in the valley from for most of its ascent/descent?

You know it makes sense.

sallywt, it is steep and visible, but I think the one you're thinking of is the Aiguille du Midi cable car. This seems to have been from the Brevent bubble.

Sad news
My dad who's in the area at the moment, heard about it on the news and told us not long ago.
They couldn't tell from the news if someone had fallen out of the gondola or if the gondola itself had fallen from the Steel Wire Rope.
My thoughts are with those involved.

The cabins are for transferring skiers from A to B, at the same time allow the skiers to rest, relax and enjoy the secenery. Not a place to mess around, pushing, kicking or causing it swings abnormally.
Let this tragedy be a lesson to all. Hope similar accident will not happen again.
