mfamily2,
well, aprt from the skiing, just follow the crowds for apre-ski....it will kick off anytime after 5...
Stop off at the Umbrella bars and then follow the music...
finding apre in Soll was easy...and I can't see how it has changed

busiest bar is the whiskey mule which shows sport/good music/live bands
couple of good apres ski bars on the way back from the gondola just after the tunnel under the main road - cannot remember the name of the one (its on the right) but they do steak sandwiches on the veranda whcih were awesome!!
the ski area itself it pretty big - sign posting is a nightmare but you can get a lot in within a day

mfamily2, you must try the night skiing. You'll need goggles with clear or almost clear lenses and it'll be freeeezin' cold. Another night you could do the tobogganing - eat up the mountain at the Haxenalm then toboggan down. Try the Panoramabad... in/out swimming pool/sauna. Get a taxi to Kitzbuhel where you'll find a nice "gentlemen's club" (forget the name of it but the taxi driver will know) or sample some of the other night spots . If you're the wrong side of 40 I suspect you won't like the Whiskey Muhle but there are loads of other suitable drinking holes that you'll stumble across.

The name of the pub I think nick0861 is talking about is the Salven Stadl. It is the bar on the right facing the nursery slopes. IMO it is the best bar ever for apres ski. They have live music some nights, karaoke on others. The food on the veranda is excellent but the best bit is the nail game. They have a big tree trunk in the bar and anyone who wants to play gets a nail. The idea being to hit the nail with the skinny side on the hammer. Last person to get their nail in buys a round of shots. Super fun!!

wl,
Yes, that is a great apes bar. Totally mad. There is also one at the bottom of the nursery slopes, but above the base gondola station.
We tried sledging there a few years ago. You can hire them and there is a devoted run frim the top of the gondola station. Great fun

Went last two years with older chaps, we liked the bar jast above the base gondola station, although the euro pop ompah mish mash will get to you in the end, then after lodging our skis and boots in the ski garage within the shop under the gondola station we would progress in comfort to the Talstation bar on the left towards the town. into the evning we liked bar Austria and had good pizzas etc in a the two pizza places one is on the main road and faces the mountain the other is just down the hill walking away from the church, you may need to wait at the bar or book (i'm sorry i can't remember the name of it.) We had a bad meal in a large hotel in the centre which specialises in steaks got treated very shabbily cos it was nearly nine I think, its on the right as you go towards the Mule (again cant remember the name but it was a very disappointing). There's lots of live music about had very nice nights out there. Concur that you might not enjoy the Mule and its compulsory cloakroom scenario. Overall Soll is fun and you won't feel like your paying through the nose.
Dining on the mountain is great too. Yes it was an eating holiday with a bit of skiing thrown in!

ian's right - some of the mountain food is great; make sure you have at least one 'Kaisershmarren' or 'Germ Knodel' (the names won't make any more sense once you've seen them!), and if it's still there then stop off for a roast chicken at the big place at the foot of the main slopes above Soll.
You'll find the nightlife pretty easily in Soll...it's not subtle
Skiing-wise, it's worth heading to Westendorf at least once if you can...got some really nice reds towards the snow park area.

Yep agreed affectionately called 'the Chicken shack' by us, it did sell out if you were too late. However other great options instead.

Anyone stayed at the Pension Edinger - some very cheap deals there through Thomson and I don't mind clean and basic but is it small and pokey too?

thanks - have a great week - I am very envious - last year the snow was only mediocre and it was busy but I bet next week it will be quiet and the snow is much better so you should have a great time - less queues at bar too of course!

sally s, keeping fingers crossed for good snow. I keep looking at the forecasts, j2ski, skiclub, netweather, metcheck, skiwelt snowheads. I think I just need to see it with my own eyes as they all give different forecasts although snow depths are fairly consistent. Nearly there though!!

sally s, Just got back from a week in Soll at Hotel Edinger. Excellent location and rooms were Austrian twin with ensuite. We had a triple with two in and found it had plenty of room. Our friends had a twin which was about average I would say. Each room has a shared balcony. Breakfast was basic continental, owner was friendly. The ski hire shop was right underneath the Hotel, Dave's who was English and the equipment we hired was excellent. For £250 B+B it was excellent value for money. Skiing was great. Best part for me was skiing over to Westendorf and skiing top to bottom on a very respectable red.

Thanks for that info - we are still hanging on for a bargain and have pretty much decided on Soll - what were the conditions like - is that blue run down through trees to bottom open (closed last year)? Pleased you had a great time - and for a bargain too!

The blue run was closed and the red was certainly not for the feint hearted at the days end. Snow was fine on piste but numbers of skiers increased difficulty somewhat. I wouldn't have taken my kids down it. The rest of the area on piste was fine and we had plenty of sunshine early in the week. However by Wednesday the run down to Brixen was looking desperate, I presume south facing. Everything above 1100mts on piste was good skiing. We had a good dump on Thursday and this freshened things up leaving most pistes that we used around Soll above the Brixen Gondola and aroung Hoe Salve in great shape. Spent Friday in powder and sunshine. Hope you get what you are looking for.

Just back from Soll myself (yesterday).
As said snow was great on Thursday and Friday. Spent Friday in Westendorf and had a great time there...
Unfortunately it rained high up on night of Friday to Saturday and that made the snow quite icy, especially in the morning.
Home run to Soll (red one), as any other (Westendorf's was truly awful..), is not great but I 'd rather do that than take the Gondola back down.
Overall the Skiwelt is in good conditions, if a bit hard/icy, and would still recommend it. They will need a big dump soon though to maintain this..
mfamily2,
Hardly went to the SalvenStadl in the end. We spent our time at the SportsBar as we were crashing at the manager's house. We spent a fortune there!
