Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where would you ski this weekend?

Hey guys.

Going for my last ski trip this season, only for a long weekend, traveling Thursday, skiing from Friday to Sunday.
I know weather can be quite unpredictable in the mountains, but checking the forecast, it shows snow/rain the whole weekend in basically all countries in the alps Confused

Where would you go for better conditions this weekend? We're only looking for on-piste skiing.

Last week I was at Alpe d'Huez and conditions were not great, too hot and either slushy or rainy.
Thinking about temperature, thought about going higher, so Cervinia/Zermatt(staying in Cervinia) would be great, but I know it can suffer with strong winds and the lifts may not open.
Val d'Isere(staying in Tignes) was also an option... which high places do you think may be more bad-weather proof? As I will be driving, I can go to any country in the alps.
Any tips?

Cheers!

I'm in Saas Fee this weekend, arriving at some point Thursday, through to Sunday, and looks snowy Friday, but better Saturday. Might be worth a look?

A shorter trip makes it ideal to go somewhere less big.

Les Contamines, Les Sept Laux, something like that.

@Layne, I don't think so... if I'm going to drive for 10-12h for just 3 days of ski, I prefer to go to a place that has more options than the average of 50km of pistes like those ones you mentioned.
Also, those resorts are quite low, not good for this warm end of winter.

@AndreSilva, your choice but they are neither particularly small or low.

Both have 120km piste and lots of skiing between 1600 and 2500 and conditions are better than they have been most of the season right now.

There are no high places that are weather proof. You would need trees. In which case either side of the Vanoise Express would be my recommendation.

But also not sure what forecasts you are looking at - snow-forecast shows light snow Friday and cloudy but no snow on Saturday, winds light to moderate so maybe just go to Cervenia and Tignes.

@AndreSilva, Saas Fee not a bad call at all.

Grands Montets probably OK too although the family have all been sayinig it's a limited window.

@AndreSilva, worth consideration, Siviez in 4V as has good aspect, drive to ease, along with significant piste distance to offer. Lift to top of Verbier (and back down over itinerary to get back if you don't ski that gradient) obviously depends apon snow level currently, as does anywhere.

Nendaz it's neighbour too, but same ski area. All certainly a little underrated area of 4V ski domain and often overlooked in recommendations.

@BobinCH, do you see next week being better? A lot of disturbance this weekend but maybe high temps, may amount to nothing

Are there long term indications for next week?

Slightly biased as I'm there now but Les Arcs is holding up well enough, particularly up high.

Gets a bit slushy down towards 1600 but it's fine above that, especially the 2000 bowl.

After some research, I decided to go to Tignes this weekend, but today I was checking this:
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/shipments-stopped-totalenergies-refineries-strike-continues-2023-03-20/

Apparently the strikes in France are going strong... do you think it can be a problem fuel-wise? Imagine having to refuel in the middle of the trip and not being able to rolling eyes

Just following up here, I decided to go to Val d'Isere last weekend.
Well...temperature and lack of snow were DEFINITELY not a problem Laughing
Got snow during the day for basically the whole Friday/Saturday/Sunday, the temperature was between 0 and 5 during the day and around -5 at night.

At first I was quite disappointed because I was expecting to get some bluebird days in March, especially because I was skiing with my X9 Friday and all the slopes had something like 20cm of fresh snow on the top... but on Saturday and Sunday I went up with my brand new Salomon QST 92 and it was amazing! I'm decent on-piste but still need to learn a lot on off-piste conditions, and this was perfect for training! During the 2 last days I was skiing on the side of the slope, through trees and skiing on the ungroomed part between slopes, it was awesome, soft snow everywhere!
On Sunday it was snowing so much that it was the first time in my life that the snow at the end of the day was better than in the beginning snowHead
It was a great way to end the season... now waiting for November!

It was spring, but looked like Christimas! snowHead
