As title - just noticed that S&N are opening a new store in Leeds, something badly needed for us on the East side of the country,
especially following the fire at the Sheffield shop....

albob, Leeds.......... what ever happened to Centre Sport, Severn Sport, Lilliewhites, just to mention 3 of the failed ski retailers to hit the dust.
Don't tell me, S&N are opening up in the Victorian Arcade! Best selling lines are going to be Dynastar Omesofts and Sally SX 92 Equipes!
Been there, done that!

skimastaaah, didn't realise you were a local. Julian fitted my first pair of boots at centresports....then he went to Ellis Brigham, not sure where he is now..
But I think Nevis is the only retailer left in Leeds?

Their little map there is putting it in the new Trinity centre.
Yeah, I think Nevis is the only "proper" outdoor shop in Leeds now, and that's a bit of a walk out of the main shopping area. You can buy ski clothing though at Cotswolds, Jack Wolfskin and The North Face, so maybe they are wanting to fit in alongside the more upmarket brands in the shiny new location? Maybe it will work out for them - Leeds seems to be holding on to the designer labels more than the cheaper stores which mainly exist further out of the centre.

skimastaaah,

Trinity location great if you into city centre shopping, good to see them in String of Beads. Personally I'd rather drive to a ski gear store but I guess they'll do ok in Leeds, other trendy stores around it will high street their brands for sure.

Trinity is handy for the train too.
I think Julian has fitted most skiers in the Yorkshire area.

My thoughts as well,.......... I just can't see someone karting their skis on the Airedale/Wharfedale/Bradford trains, then lugging them up to the new S&N shop for a service.

There are other places easier to drive to where you can get a service done though, surely this will be more about flogging shiny £800 Kjus jackets to those who also frequent Harvey Nicks across the road?

I've still got my CentreSport boot bag from from around 25 years ago ! (It has lasted so long 'cos the boots often travel in the suitcase. )

popped in over lunch - store over 3 floors - cycles on the bottom - outdoor on teh ground and ski on the 1st
Not a massive range and more high end (Schoeffel, Kjus, Arcteryx, NorthFace, Salomon etc). If you pop in there's various discounts available (10% on spend over £100, £40 on spend over £300)
Nice to see a ski shop back in town but im guessing they're hedging their bets by having the cycle store there as well

Cycling will be tough gig with Chevin, All Terrain, Stif and Ilkley Cycles, plus Woodrup and many others locally plus all the mail order companies like Wiggle, Chain Reaction and the indies at it too. Good luck to them, hope they do OK but I'd rather have seen them out of town on M1/62/A1M corridor somewhere.

S&R closed down their store in Croydon a few months ago. They always had people in there - assume they weren't shifting the big-ticket items and the high rental cost of retail space in the area took them down...

@Richard_Sideways, Place full of tyre-kickers eh....good mooch over it, make all the right noises then go and order on-line or use indies, who'd do such a thing?

Actually I think I did buy something every time I went in there, even if it wasn't necessarily something I'd gone in for. We are a bit lacking in indys round our way.

I know this is a classic bit of thread resurrection but I have a colleague looking for boots at the moment and was wondering if anyone knows if S&R in Leeds have a decent boot fitter? Otherwise its trying to find him one in Northern Ireland with the challenges that brings as he doesnt think Belfast has a decent one atm.

You know it makes sense.
|
@Kamikaze Pete, sorry, no idea, but I think locals in the know will use one of the specialists instead. Other bootfitters are available in the Leeds area if he has transport.

If he's in the area, I'd send him over to Rivington Alpine (Lancs) or Glide n Slide in Otley. Both have good reputations on here.

They are good at http://www.glideslide.co.uk/ but it is in Otley which is not that easy to get to from Leeds unless he has a car.
Try a pm to Thornyhill he is in NI he may know of someone over there.

Another vote for Glide and Slide. There is a fairly frequent bus service between Leeds and Otley if he hasn't access to a car.

Can't quite get my head round the choices being Leeds or Belfast for boots - not exactly a Leeds vs Sheffield or Manchester-type decision...

@Kamikaze Pete, Id recommend Rivington Alpine, I have been there in the past and they are good, speak to them before you go to make sure they have time, they get very busy. I live near Glide & Slide and have never had boots fitted there but they have a decent reputation. All that said there's a lot of voodoo about boot fitting I think, unless you've got problem/ misshapen feet IMO just fire the hairdryer in them to warm up, bang the custom insole in and walk about for 2-3 hours. I did that last time and they fit like a glove, not had any issues despite a high instep, narrow heel and wider than normal calves. Fiddle about, moving clips etc is easy if required, custom insole is key.
