Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

With about a month until the scheduled start of skiing here I guess it's time to start this years thread. No new lifts in the region this year but there have been some changes of interest. Treble Cone has done an upgrade on it's Home Basin chair and purchased two new winch groomers. Cardrona has done quite a bit of earth works both to the terrain park and creating some new runs and upgrading others. Also a new cafe and toilets and increased car parking at the base of the Valley View chair. The Remarkables has sealed a few more km's of the road and added more parking spaces. Nothing new that I know of for Coronet Peak. The weather has been unseasonably warm but hopefully turnning colder and wetter as this week goes on. More to come as the winter gets closer. Very Happy

We have had a bit of snow over the last few days but mostly only at higher elevations until last night. I woke up this morning to see that Coronet Peak has started snow making Very Happy Very Happy It may just be their preseason systems test but it could be the start of the base for the season. Some more snow forecast off and on over the next few days. Bring it on.

We have now just had a couple of days of snow down to about 800m so well below the bottom of the lowest lifts. That and some serious snow making has made a great start to this winters snow base. Reports of 75cm in the Remarkables and 20cm+ on Coronet Peak with lovely cold conditions forecast has brought lots of smiles to town.

With less than two weeks till the first lifts due to open the snow cover is looking pretty good. We have had a number of small snow falls with nicely cold temperatures and snow was down to about 600m this morning. Cold and sunny conditions forcast so snow making should help top up natures offering.

After a couple of days of rain to make us all sad Coronet Peak is opening today. Limited lifts and runs open and off piste will be pretty much unskiable. The good news is that the weather is turning colder so snow making is back on and there is some snow in the forcast. Should be a bit better by tuesday which is my next day off.

Well nothing but bad news down here as we have had a return of the record warm temperatures and some rain so most of the snow has washed away. So bad that Coronet Peak has closed until further notice (snow fall) and the Remarkables is still open but very limited. Maybe a few cm's coming this week but nothing serious in the forecast. Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad

Still no major improvement in this part of the world. It has been cold enough for snowmaking off and on but not sufficient for Coronet Peak to re open. Treble Cone has not opened at all so far and with Cardrona and The Remakables both open with thin snow and big crowds it has been the worst start in years. Still hoping for winter to arrive but it won't be this week.

@hang11, I hope so. With a run of cooler weather allowing continual snowmaking Coronet Peak is re opening on Saturday but skiing will be restricted to man made snow only. Fingers crossed that some snow is coming.

Finally some snow has arrived. 10cm overnight and more coming over the next few days. Not a great amount so far but anything at all is welcome given the situation. I have had only two days on the snow this season which considering the first lifts opened over a month ago is a very sad state of affairs.
Hope to have better news as time goes on.

Another bad start?!? I remember the last few years weren't great in the NI, but was always told it comes rather later than the hoped for opening dates.

10 to 30cm in the last 36hrs so it does look like winter is here at last. More off and on during the next few days just in time for my first couple of weeks of ski holiday Very Happy

A good night for snow last night with quite a good fall on the local mountains. These are the posted amounts. Reamrkables 15cm, Coronet Peak 30cm, Cardrona 15 to 25cm and Treble Cone more that 50cm. Now it does really look like winter and we have more forecast tonight and the next few days. Even the lower areas such as Coronet Peak are now well covered. A couple of photos to show you what it was like today.

@Sarge McSarge, I've got a nephew out there at the moment, doing a season at Cardrona. He emailed me this morning to say this:

"I had a phenomenal powder day yesterday - we had 50cm through the week and close to 30cm fresh overnight - I was on the third chair and just smashed some awesome terrain all morning! I got fresh tracks on heaps of lines/faces and multiple 20ft+ cliffs too - so sick!"

Reckon he's doing ok.

@Double Bombardino, Sounds like he is having a good time Very Happy All the mountains have picked up some good snow in the last few days with at least 45cm everywhere. It's snowing again this morning and should continue off and on until at least tomorrow morning. No complaints from this part of the world.

Another 15 to 20 cm's on the mountains since yesterday so the good run continues. So busy at Coronet Peak today that they have closed the road and are turning people away. The lift queues will be horrendous, good thing I came home for lunch.

Not so lucky as it mostly missed us and went up the east coast and further north which is good news for Canterbury area with good falls reported from Mt Hutt and others. Just a few cm's on the local mountains but on top of what we have had in the last week it is all looking pretty good.

We were there late July when the storms rolled in. It looks like it has stayed pretty fine since.

Yup pretty fine with just a light fall on Sunday night which gave us a lovely smooth velvet feeling on top of the existing surface. Especially nice on the ungroomed which had a soft ski packed surface before the snow fall. Since then it has been fine weather and lovely skiing.
@gortonator, Great report on Treble Cone and Cardrona. They are both great fun with fresh snow.

After a few weeks of warm and dry conditions with hardly a flake of new snow we have just had 45 to 55cm's in the last 24hrs. This has transformed the mountains from spring conditions with a few bare spots back to lovely cold winter conditions Very Happy Very Happy

@mountainaddict, The season usually ends about the first weekend in October. Best time is from late July through to early September but to be honest it can be quite variable at any time. It is very much spring here now with a lot of bare spots on the ridges but still good coverage on most of the main runs. Hard in the mornings but softening as the day goes on and very few people. Off piste is looking pretty rough at the mo.

A few photos from a couple of weeks ago. Not looking so good now.

Looking from Outward Bound at the Remarkables down to Frankton and the airport with Queenstown along the lake to the left.

Looking up from Coronet Peak base area.
