Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

About socks

 Poster: A snowHead

Its the time of year when we start gathering a bit more of what we don't really need.
I wear ski socks more than I should ... I even wear them in bed now that I can't afford to keep the heating on.

Over the years I've worn out oodles of socks everything from C&A to Falke.

For me socks have to have marino wool in the blend. A few year ago you could get some HH branded socks from TK Max for about £10 for two pairs.
I collected all the colours available and enjoyed them.
They are not available any more but Decathelon have come to the rescue.
I was buying 65% marino blend from Decathelon for the past 3 years, but they have changed the line up now.

There are two styles of the marino socks now.
one is 32% marino blend wool for about £19
the other style has marino just on the foot area for about £12

Which to go for? Both of course.
Last night I did a field test .. or rather a bed test by wearing odd socks to bed.
The conclusion this morning was the £12 one was more comfortable.
I've been wearing the £19 pair all day and tonight I'll wear the odd socks on the other foot, to check for any bias.

Guess what I'm doing tomorrow. Smile

@DrLawn, I’ve just purchased some Merino blend socks from Sportpursuit for £11.99 in their sale. Definitely worth a look. Very Happy

Turn the light on long enough to make sure they're not L and R like mine. Very Happy

Just cross your legs. Problem solved.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@DrLawn, that's very annoying as I was liking the 65% ones and had acquired 3 pairs only for them to go out of stock.

I found an alternative but they're a bit thick.

I bought a few pairs of Stance socks in the sales at the end of last season. They have a lifetime guarantee which I’m curious to test out given i usually wear through a pair of thin merino ski touring socks in a few days!

Try icebreaker. They definitely have a lifetime guarantee in Nz, which they honour. Never ending supply of new socks and they are made out of happy neighbourhood sheep

its not just about the % merino wool in the sock, but the way it is laid in, what type of mesh framework supports it, the quality of the merino etc etc etc, being as every individual id unique it is really difficult to know what sock will work best for what person, but from what we have tested most decent brand merino blend socks work pretty well, one thing that has to be considered is the thickness of the sock and how it fits in the boot, a thicker sock will be able to have a higher % of wool as there is more sock, a thinner sock will have less % as you have to have the supporting framework regardless of the thickness

as for a lifetime guarantee, that is brave (or stupid) or they hope that people will forget about it after a while of owning the sock

@BobinCH, are the Stance ones thin? I'm in the market for some new socks and find that anything padded doesn't fit in my boots. I usually go for sock liners but they can be quite variable.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The ones I’ve got are thin (Jimmy Chin model) and I’m going to use them for ski touring. Here’s the lifetime guarantee details - seems legit

Icebreaker. The original and the best.

I have, I think, four or possibly five pairs thereof, and they've lasted me at least seven or eight seasons so far. No bobbling, no holes, usually at least three or four days between washes (I'm blessed with not-smelly feet, so YMMV) and 50-100 days per season, so their lifespan, now I come to think about it, is quite remarkable.

They do a range of thicknesses now including 'liner' and 'ultralight'; not sure I had so much of a choice when I bought mine, which are probably the medium or light ones, but they're all slightly padded where needed on the shin and heel etc. Not the cheapest but I wouldn't look at anything else.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
My Stances are thin (slightly thicker underfoot and in the toe box, but still thin and not a massive/excessive difference like some others) and over about 100 days the two pair show no signs of wearing or stretching out. They are L and R, as I discovered when I took them off on day one Embarassed They fit even better after that.
