Hi Folks,
I am new boy around here having only just registered a few days ago and I've been enjoying trawling through the various forums. Not sure if it's the done thing but I thought that I'd make a quick post to introduce myself - apologies in advance if this is a breach of etiquette.
I am in my late fifties and would class myself as a reasonable intermediate who can get down pretty much any run one way or another. However I am definitely an on-piste man and parallel turns remain a mystery to me so I’m not even sure if I qualify as a Snowhead. Feel free to escort me off the premises if I have wandered into the wrong part of town – I won’t be offended.
I am spending my first full season in the mountains and will generally be flying solo as my wife can only join me for weekly visits each month. I arrived on Jan 4 and I am due to go back to the UK at the end of March.
Today has been a lazy non-ski day and I have spent quite a lot of my time just watching the snow coming down. I am based just outside Filzmoos in the Ski Amadé region of Austria and in this neck of the woods it has been snowing steadily since Friday night so we’re getting a nice amount of the white stuff.
If anyone who is in or will be in my area is in need of an occasional ski buddy then I’d be very pleased to meet up. But in the interests of openness I do have to declare a restriction. I have my dog with me on this trip so I can’t do full days as I need to have time to attend to his requirements (generally a very long afternoon walk).
Anyway, I think I’m beginning to ramble so I’ll say toodle-pip and good skiing.
Bob.

welcome to Snowheads, @bobbev999, I'm sure you'll fit right in (lots of doggie folks round here). I'm nowhere near your neck of the woods but there are lots of Snowheads who know Austria well.
Are you just skiing for the season? (as opposed to working, that is)?
If parallel turns are still a mystery, maybe sign up for some lessons?

@bobbev999, great first post. Welcome to snowHeads. Sadly I'm not going to Austria this season, but I do hope that some people will get in touch with you if they're in your neck of the woods. It might be an idea to mention your location in the thread title.

Thanks for the warm welcome - I surely do appreciate it.
@pam_w - I am just skiing (and dog walking) so no pesky work to worry about. With regard to lessons, I know that you're right but I have a bit of a chequered history vis-à-vis ski instructors. The fault is all mine as I seem to be incapable of taking on board the improvement points that they highlight. The problem is that I am a very poor learner and it has taken me a long time to reach the lamentably low standard that I currently ski to. I just don't have any technical awareness - body position, weight distribution, no idea really! I have got rather used to skiing within my own capabilities and I always have huge fun out on the slopes. But I will take your wise words on board - maybe there is a tutor out there somewhere who can teach this old dog some new tricks!
@igLou - envy is a very negative emotion so don't let that eat away at you
@Pedantica - good advice, wish I'd thought of it before posting. I guess that I can make a thread on the Solo Skiers v Groups forum to advertise my location - would that be the right place?

you can edit your thread title.
Some of the Austrian-based SHs can probably point in you in the direction of a really good instructor! Indeed, some of them ARE instructors.....

@pam-w - good advice, thanks. I have edited my title and I will look to my fellow SHs for some teaching suggestions.

@Kooky - many thanks for the invite. I have been to one night race a few years ago in Flachau but the Schladming race looks like a much bigger event. Presumably I'd be able to get a ticket on the night? I am interested but I'll hold off on a final decision to see what the weather is like. I'm a bit of a wimp about driving in heavy snow and my driveway is a sod to get up if it hasn't been ploughed. Will definitely get in touch re skiing though - be nice to get out and about with some 'locals', so to speak.

@Scarpa, I have no problem with the thread highjack, it's all rather amusing. What does concern me though is how the hell Kooky got that old photo of me! It was one helluva après ski night though.

That would be cool. I have wheels as well so can get anywhere in the area - look forward to making your acquaintance at some point.

Now that the snow has stopped I ventured out today and had a morning's skiing in Flachauwinkel. As I drew into the car park I noticed 6 or 8 white transit vans with GB plates and once I reached the Klienarl side I spotted the content - a large quantity of British snowboarders all wearing numbered vests (not sure what the collective noun is for a group of boarders - a bevy, a flock? - but I'm sure that someone can enlighten me). The side of one run had been set up for a slalom and there were perhaps 40 boarders all sideslipping down, presumably memorising the gate positions. Is there such a shortage of boarders in Austria that they now have to import them by the vanload?
