Been snowing most of the day but just stopped and the skies are clearing , forecast is for a clear day tomorrow. Most piste's now open apart from blue 68 to Viehhofen , it could be opened again this week but will depend on the conditions lower down on the run. All runs that are open are in good condition and staying so as the temperatures have been low for the last couple of days , forecast is for it too warm up back end of the week and the weekend.

Fine day here in Saalbach , great morning ski without any crowds and the slopes in great condition. Warm here today but snow forecast for Sunday/Monday but the temperatures are up and down again next week but with the half term crowds around I would usually get first lifts and knock it on the by lunch time and chill in the afternoons.

Looks to be snowing today, but rather wet snow lower down. Weather forecast is very mild for the next few days. Hope it cools down before we get there!

Its was raining in the village early this morning but snow up top, the rain has now changed to snow in the village but its very wet snow lower down and not really sticking due to it being mild , due to continue snowing/raining into Monday and the forecast is for mild weather for the next couple of weeks , depending on which forecast you follow. Pistes are still good but heavy today due to the wet snow , when I can back from a early ski the medical centre next to where I live was very busy , not really surprised when you see some of the antics happening on the slopes.

The snow and weather reports online seem to be hugely variable. We head out in 3weeks. From some long term reports there's some great snow expected while other reports suggest warm temperatures which don't bode we'll......confusing, completing but I guess we'll just need to continue doing the snow dances!!

New snow overnight about 15-20 cm on the hill less lower down , had a ski about this morning found snow good fresh stuff higher up but the lower slopes were very heavy even early morning due to the rain and wet snow at village leave upto about 1300 metres. Piste's are very busy as expected during the half term weeks , more snow is due Wednesday but again the snow is not the issue its the temperatures which are high for the time of the year as the fohn is due back again this week.

A warm and sunny day here once you got above the mist in the valley , all the upper runs are skiing well but lower runs are suffering from mid morning as the freeze level has been above village level for the last few nights. Snow/rain is forecast for tomorrow with more snow due this weekend , should be interesting if the temperatures fall so the snow is not as wet as it has been over the last week. Blue 68 down to Viehoffen is closed at the moment I guess due to condition of the lower sections of the piste.

A light dusting of snow here today turning to rain below 1500 metre's , not quite what was forecast but that seems to be this season's weather pattern. Tomorrow is getting better with sun and broken cloud with snow forecast for Friday into Saturday.

the saint,

Just got back from Hinterglemm. Had an epic week snowHead

Having panicked for weeks about the poor snow prior to departure, in the end it didn't bother us at all - there was plenty to ski on and everything looked pretty and white.

Just had a fantastic week skiing in Hinterglemm/Saalbach. Very, very impressed, so much so that we are already considering coming back next year.

Was worried about the snow conditions beforehand, but it was fine. Bit slushy lower down by mid-afternoon but if you just stayed higher up it was perfect.

Update 28th Feb 2014:

It's been sunny all week, so all this week's guests should be going home well tanned (including the flock of Angry Bird Snowheads). Best skiing is to be had between 09.00 and 13.00 after which the lower slopes are turning to mush so worth considering riding down from the mid-station rather than risking a silly end-of-the-day knee twist. Upper slopes are fine, bordering on excellent. The trip to Leogang is still a great day out and the Chicken Man has been doing a roaring trade, with everyone sitting out in the sun eating ribs and chicken.

A little snow has been forecast for the weekend, but starting to wonder if it ever going to appear. If it doesn't, and the temperatures remain high, then the sunny side of the valley is likely to be finished in 2-3 weeks time. The shady side is holding up well though.

Pam B, it's pretty slushy lower down by 4pm, especially on the home runs, BUT don't despair. Conditions are great in the morning and early afternoon, and it only gets really bad near the bottom.

The main run to avoid after 3pm is 2b, which was horrendous the day we came down it at 5pm. Sheet ice and slushy moguls. The run to the Hinterhag Alm is quite yucky past 3 as well. I had a big crash on it yesterday (which hurt!) after picking up too much speed on those silly sleeping-policeman-type ridges that build up in places.

Afternoon all - flying out on saturday 8th too with 10 mates and the husband. He is in ski school - suspect he will boil alive!

Can anyone help with a liftpass question? He is a complete beginner (on skis - he's smashed the backside off boarding) is there a 'points' pass for the lifts we can get him rather than a full area one to start with?

Thanks

S

Yes, it's called a 'Points Card' - 500 points cost €50, 1000 points cost €100.
1000 points will probably be sufficient for the first 3-4 days, depending on how quickly the group progresses. Chat with the ski instructor on day one about where they think the group will go - passes are available at all lift stations and it only takes a minute to buy.
Full area pass costs €227 for 6 days.

Re: the Points Card - you can see the cost (in Points) for each lift on the lift map that is available at all of the lift offices and will probably be in your hotel welcome pack. So the Turm 6 Lift, where the beginners often start, costs 17 points per trip. The points count down and the balance is visible at the electronic gate as you go through.

Just realised I haven't posted an end of trip comment!

Our group of 11 (including several Angry Birds) had a fabulous time. The skiing was excellent in the morning, and we also enjoyed two trips right down to Leogang with great snow both times. The little black there is a nice run and not difficult. Some of the group attempted Black 14 on one day (I was off ill that day Sad) and enjoyed it, but took the detour route on the really steep bits (apart from one very brave person!).

We had several excellent apres sessions at the Hinterhag Alm and Goassstall, plus some enjoyable Happy Hours at the Berger Alm and lovely lunches at the Alte Schmeide, Asitz Brau and Grabbenhutte. The evenings were spent mainly at Bobby's Pub, with a few outings to the Underbar and the Zum Turn (I love it in there). Some of the men in the group disappeared downstairs to the lapdancing club from where we heard many interesting tales. I can't comment as I didn't go.

The hotel bar was actually quite nice to sit and chill out in - just a shame about the smokers. The main bar next door was OK, but the entertainment was pretty cheesy!

Honorary mention goes to Tatman's Tours and the lovely C for providing superb company and (as always) the best ski-hosting skills in Saalbach. Everyone had a wonderful time and we were so grateful. I'm glad the whole group got to meet you both this time.

As for Berger's Sporthotel itself, it was fine - but I think a bit over-priced for what it is. Its location is undeniably superb, right in the centre of town and just a short walk to several lifts. I think that is really what you're paying for. Our room on the top floor was nice but very compact with not much storage. It was also in the eaves with one small window, so felt a little claustrophobic at first. Decor is getting a bit tired - but not the 'porn palace' I was expecting. Some of the group used the pool and sauna and said they were great. Food wasn't too bad. Some odd combinations at times though (lamb curry with banana?). But there was plenty of it and the waiting staff were great and friendly. Staff generally were nice and very helpful. Mrs Berger is always around and comes to say hi. Tania behind the bar is lovely.

Overall I'd recommend it - but the food in the Konig along the road is far better, the rooms are bigger and I think it is a better value hotel. It just isn't quite as central.

I will definitely return to Saalbach, it never disappoints. We were very spoilt with tons of snow last year, but even though the conditions weren't as good this time, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We've just returned from a week in Saalbach too staying at the Konig. It was a good hotel with good size rooms and good food (albeit salty). It was also a good location for us as our girls went to the Snow Academy ski school which is right out the back of the hotel. Otherwise it is a drag lift up towards the Bauer pub and a short walk across the road to the Kohlmais, and a short walk down the main road to the Schattberg gondola.

This was our 3rd visit to Saalbach but our first with children and the combination of the hotel location and ski school worked really well. The ski school was very good, although a little disorganised on the first morning as it seemed up to the instructors to sort out their groups. I approached one of the instructors and she sorted out a class for my children who were beginners age 3 and 6. They spent most of the week in the learners area which was only used by the ski school and was well equipped with 3 magic carpets. By the end of the week they were skiing blues and I was a very proud Mummy!

I agree with HoneyBunny about the skiing this year - the snow in Leogang is holding up well and the Tiroler grostl at the Asitz is very good!

HoneyBunny, one of our group decided he could handle the last very steep bit of black 14 (which was sheet brown ice!) Needless to say he fell on the first turn and went all the way to the bottom on his bottom! Luckily all was well.

AlexOve, hello and welcome to Snowheads. It has been very warm in Saalbach, so I'm not sure how much longer the sunny south side of the resort can last, there are already several runs closed.

However I'm sure you will still find plenty to ski on, they are doing a good job of conserving the snow.

Hopefully those who are spending the season there will be along with more knowledge soon.
