Very badly setup test, he is using a video camera and probably carrying a mobile phone. Test results from F1 and Pluse show no interference from a GoProHD2
Besides in a real crash, let alone avalanche your helmet cam gets ripped off and ends up 100's of meters away!

After wanting an underwater camera for a while, I finally bit the bullet and I bought the GoPro HD2 this summer. I bought the 'Outdoor' edition in the states for $300 brand new including the LDC backpack. I used it with the headstrap all summer whilst surfing and scuba diving and some of the footage I got from it was fantastic. The LDC backpack was a great addition because it meant I could view my footage in the water and check I got all the shots I wanted.
I was pretty upset when I found out, just weeks later, that the HD3 was being released But that's by the by really.
Now i want to use the camera for the upcoming ski season. My question is; where should I mount it? It's going to be used by myself, my OH and possibly a couple of the others in our party (they've said they'd like to give it a go) so i was wondering whether a chest harness would be a good investment? Or should I just stick the mounts on my helmet and my OH's helment and take it from there? I'd rather the cam doesn't stick up like an aerial on the top of my helmet but I wear a Bern with a peak so if I mount it right at the front i'm not sure how good the shot will be (perhaps the peak will get in the way).
Has anyone any experience of the chest harness and/or different helmet mount positions? Thanks
Kevin Stephens, as I pointed out on UKC a lot of electronics can cause interference as can metal object to some transceivers. If you read the manual that comes with most of them they actually tell you in it not to put electronics or metal within a certain range of the device. Idris, the interference caused is mostly a problem for the transceiver when searching not the receiver transmitting, and hopefully the searchers didn't get avalanched as well so it is a legit concern.
Having both a HD2 and a Tracker2 to hand I can demonstrate that this does happen if people really want.
I can also show it happening with my headtorch and umpteen other bits of electronics to include mobile phones.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Katie Smiler, not for skiing but a friend of mine has the chest mount and uses it mountain biking. It gives really good and steady shots because your torso is less likely to bounce about like your head (certainly on a bike!).
Just a thought. I was thinking of buying the chest mount myself for my Hero 2 for the same reasons.

Hi All
I have been watching this thread and learning loads. I am in the market for a helmet cam and was going to buy a hero gopro 1to get me started but not sure now. I was under the impression that gopro was the only real option but it seems there are more to choose from. I have had a go with a hand held standard camcorder in teh past, but my hands got bloody cold very quickly.
I only want to get some footage of us skiing and messing around. Nothing serious at all, so I am now thinking that a gopro will be to good for me. So if I just want to get some footage and then edit it with some tunes over the top what should I go for?
My budget is 100 quid and I want something simple to use that sticks on my ski helmet. HD would be good as the camcorder I used before is not and although the footage is ok, it could be better. I am not after some all sing all dancing bit of kit. Just something that I press go on and then forget about for a couple of hours then download when I get home. What do you reckon I should go for?
Thanks in advance
Smag

smagsmith, you can definitely get the original GoPro HD second hand for less than 100 quid. If you want to buy something new around that price the Drift camera linked on the previous page is a great bet.

smagsmith, as a start up hd cam gopro may not be the best buy.
the gopro's are certainly the industry standard, but so is Aston Martin in the car market.
There's way too much pussy-stroking on these threads for the GoPro's, and not everyone's a demanding "pro". look at the options, simples.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

As a quick further point and sidestepping the image quality question. One small advantage the gopro form factor and mounting options does afford is the chest mount, this option gives you something you can wear underneath a jacket if required. You can then just open the zip a bit and start recording. I haven't seen a similar mount (though to be fair I haven't done much investigation) for the bullet type cameras.
Still a pain getting your chest high enough to record the Nurbergring
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

and one other thng to consider is warranty claims, saving £70 on you camera is fine till you have to send it back to them via ups and a warranty claim ends up costing you £100.
not saying dont do it, but caveat empour applies.
Let's consider that. I just got one of my GoPro HD2 cameras back from warranty replacement and can tell you precisely how that works.
I live in the UK but spend time abroad so I paid $299US rather than £299UK. So that's £187.07, or a saving of £111.93.
This HD2 didn't work well with the ProTune upgrade, so GoPro support RMAed it and sent me a replacement by return. The cost to me was £3.40 postage back to them. That's a net saving of £108.53 excluding the cost of the brown paper I wrapped it in which I already had.

Agreed it can work out but not with all retailers and not with all issues.

So is there anything else in the budget £30-£50 range that Skimastaah has made a recommendation in?
It'll be used for a week a year hopefully better than trying to use a mobile phone.
At that price, if it's crap you can chuck it and not have lost too much.

oldmike, Ebay has quite a range. New, S/H, whatever. Just take the time to check out what the specs are, some are surprisingly good at under £50. Under £100 there's some damn good stuff. Drift, Bullet, DogCam, and don't worry about buying out of Hong Kong! That's where they are all made.

Katie Smiler, try mixing up your mounts a bit. Mounted on a ski pole and pointed back toward you gives an interesting shot. Also, a short monopod is quite handy for filming other people - it stabilises the camera a bit and it's easier to aim whilst you're skiing - just point it at the person you're shooting. Also, boot mounting and ski mounting works well too. Mounting on your helmet and pointing straight down at your skis can be good for short sections, especially when in powder or in the air. Hours of footage from one angle gets boring very quickly, so get a few different ones and mix them up!

you mean it doesn't come with that as standard? Another point to the Drift
Some packages come with a tether as standard, some don't but you can buy extra tethers directly from gopro sellers.

philwig, its not that much extra data, I can edit the protune H.264 right out of the camera with no transcoding to a ProRes intermediary on my laptop! It's not even as a high a bitrate you get out with some DSLRs when shooting video let alone anywhere near a RAW format like CinemaDNG.
Interesting. The CineForm conversion takes all my 8 cores and isn't quick, even with Ivy Bridge/ 16G/ CUDA (doesn't offload to it, unlike Adobe) and more SSDs and disks than I can shake a GoPro pole at. No disrespect to anyone's laptop, but I'm using a beast and it's having to work. Perhaps I'm doing something inefficiently.
Compared with my DLSRs this stuff is slow to process. I will take a second look and see what I'm doing wrong. It may be just that I'm having to do more processing with it.

philwig, don't bring it through CineForm, simples. ProTune is basically setup to work with Technicolor CineStyle and there are umpteen ways to colour correct the image. There are plugins like this for example to convert it to REC709:
http://pomfort.com/plugins/dslrlog2video.html
Or if you want to get fancy download the free version of DaVinci Resolve.
But yes as soon as I start rendering or transcoding I do notice that on the laptop.

I just use prussik-style cord - mate works in Cotswold Outdoors so we got a couple of metres worth for a couple of quid, and shared it out between everyone in the uni kayak club with a gopro, works very well.

clarky999, Got me some nylon cord yesterday at local hardware shop, £0.60 for 5 metres! Got some funny looks this morning in the garden, wandering around with my helmet, goggles on, new Contour mount testing footage etc, all good. Then edged and waxed 4 pairs of skis this afternoon, only 6 weeks to go, getting bored now!!
My friend uses the liquid image camera googles and they're superb. I like the fact that the lens is built into the goggle and is not noticeable compared to the silly looking 'go pro' perched on top of your head.
These are this year's model. Previous models are much cheaper.
The only issue I have with the liquid image goggles is that you have to wear them to get the footage (well unless you want to carry them around) so you're point of view if limited to head based shooting perspective.

Why do you think people look "silly" with a Go Pro, no sillier than getting some fairly useles goggles with a camera that you can only use when skiing?
Go Pro (or any other mounted camera) are way more flexible than goggle cams.

I just think having a camera perched on top of the head looks daft (just my opinion) therefore, I'd never consider wearing one. I'd be too self conscious especially as I'm not a great skier and I think the go pro sings "check me out". I agree that the camera googles aren't as versatile but I would only use this type of camera whilst skiing so the fact that it can't be used for anything else doesn't matter to me. If I had a go pro, I wouldn't use that for anything other than skiing either.
