JimW, yes, it's a small and rapidly disappearing thing that the top few hundred metres of the black run sits on in the winter. A number of years ago Les Arcs used to have a small summer ski field on the glacier, but that is no longer the case and I think the short drag lift that served the summer ski run was removed.

Morning,
Looking outside it has stopped snowing, not sure how long it did snow for but from the balcony it looks like only a small, light dusting. Just wishing it is a little warmer today as it would be nice to feel some sensation in my toes at one point this week on the slopes.

Slow start this morning as mrsfatcontroller is breaking in new boots and progress has been very slow and painful. Only went up Varet first this and skied back down before she needed a break as her feet were killing her. Left them with someone who could help but we had to wait an hour, so being the plonker I am I set of down to 1950 for coffee when wife suggests we walk to the apartment we own about 50 feet away and have coffee for nothing. Owning is a new phenomena?
Went back out about 12, down to comborciere chair only sow e could go down malgovert (nto done it yet) but it was closed. Skied down then trying to get to 1800 but I always get lsot crossing the pistes there so we ended up back on Arpette and made a decision to go to vanoise and dwon to Montchavin to see Cyril in La Ferme De Cesar. Excellenty lunch, as always. Mrsfatcontroller tried his new salad which involves deep fried brie in pastry with fig in it served on a bed of salad and bacon. She says it was lovely, I would like to report on it qualities but skiing seemingly allows the wife to eat deep fried brie and not pass any to her husband.
After lunch she hit eureka moment in boots and we went up to Dos Rond in La Plagne and did Pierre Blanches down to Vanoise (skipping of down Les Pelles), bit bare in parts but still our favorite run in Paradski.
Back across then into 2000 and did a bit more.
Very cold this morning but stunning after lunch. First warmish day all week. Feet did not feel like ice blocks. As before, place does need snow but conditions overall are still quite good. Not very busy on slopes and due to get quieter next week.
Worst run of the day…..L’Ours down to Vanoise. God help beginners who make the mistake of going on it, icy and nearly completely blocked by man made mounds of snow.
They so need to think of putting some pulley ropes on the flat bits in the middle of the 2000 bowl. Howling gale in your face and far to much polling. La Plagne have them in the right spots, why not Les Arcs?
Will post photos later. On a really crap wireless link so takes ages to upload photos.

thefatcontroller, Instead of L'Ours, go to the next one - L'Ourson - its the extension of the ski lcub piste, & much quieter (although joins in with the mayhem at the bottom.

Tell me about it! (a converted boarder). When I skied (boarded) this the other week I was cursing as I had to keep stepping out and walking (his lordship was too far ahead at this point to even think about helping). POlling? Oh to have that option.
great reports really enjoying them.

absolutely - this is now my 'de-facto' route home when it's not snowy enough to down ecureils - there's never anyone on ourson pretty much, so it seems to hold the snow much better.

thefatcontroller, Yep the tows are needed in 2000, especially when the wind is running against the tuck to Arcabulle.
Still this is a snow report so todays report is simply 'more needed', the number of closed pistes has gone up - ecureuils, rouelles, Bois de l'ours all closed, and a number of other pistes have 'stony' signes up. Some of the blues are getting really icy, not helped by todays wind blowing the snow sideways off the piste - really becoming conditions for skiers not boarders - indeed I lasted 2 hours on my boards today before chopping it in for my skis.

thefatcontroller, Great photos, you are braver than me taking your gloves off when it is this cold.
One good thing about the wind, it blew quite a bit of light snow into some of the gullies and we were able to find some quite ok off piste today. Good enough to test most of those out with me for a blast. If you want to master the off piste these are the conditions when you need to go and try it. Very mixed, in one day we found powder, crud, breakable crust, wind slab, little wind ripples, hard pack, smooth snow crust and plenty of moguls. Very challenging for everyone. Sorry no pics. I would not take my gloves off today, even in the afternoon.
The altiport now serves HOT APPLE JUICE with Brandy. Very nice

thefatcontroller, if you're on a laptop, you can pop down to any of the reception areas in 1950 and get a decent free wireless connecton (tell them you are an owner... which you are - sort of!) - if they don't give you the WEP, PM me, and I'll send it over.

How are the slopes looking today? Take it no new snow? Are there any areas to avoid if its stays the same, ie too much ice etc? Coming out tonight on the Eurostar... any advice gladly welcomed by those in the know!!

Snow report for Les Arcs will simply read.........I went to La Plagne for the day
Dropped the kids down in 1950 for ski school and decided to time ourselves to Vanoise. From Marmotte we can either take Bois De L'Ours and that awful blue to Vanoise or take Marmotte and Aracubelle and have a blast from Transarc to Vanoise. It was -11 @ 9.30am by Aracubelle. Did the latter and from 1950 to Vanosie was 30 mins. Didn't take L'ours to Vanosie took the next at 9.45am it was so icy
From Vanoise we skied to Plan Bois in les Coches. Not sure why they have built another gondola in Les Coches? Went across to Plagne Bellecote and saw a 15 minute queue for the Roche bubble and no queue for the chair that goes the same way . Took the chair, came back down Les Sources. The steep bit was so icy , lots at the top of it wondering why, oh why did they come this way. Runs in that area thoguh were in very good nick. Big queues for the glacier but most runs up there shut.
Then went over to Plagne 1800 and up the chair there and down to La Roche for lunch. The red to La Roche was getting a bit stony Lovely lunch in La Roche.. Back the across to Montchavin. Pierre Blanche was very, very stony. Had time and skis need a service so from Montchavin we went back up and did Pierre Blanche again. La Plagne was nice and quiet.
Met child minder and kids at Vanosie and skied back. Kids have found a little gem in the bowl, not sure if it new. As you come of transacr, head back toward Peisey. On the first blue to the right there is a boarder cross run. Great fun, kids beat me . Kids did really well in ski school. The 8 + 10 year old did the run from the top of the glacier down to Villarogier this morning in lessons. Not bad. All 3 went up a level.
Overall conditions have not changed. Sun was out today, but still very cold. My feet were dying by the end. New snow is needed but I don't think any is forecast. Plenty of stock piles of man made so they will start pushing that out tomorrow for the people arriving for next week.
Been a great week, big boot problems, now sorted but so cold First time skiing without using a TO and owning the place changes that again. Been good though. Lessons learnt, might mention them when I get back.
Got to go mrsfatcontroller shouting at me for being on computer as packing and cleaning needs to be done. Decision in the morning whether to drive straight home or stop on route. Will decide in the morning.

thefatcontroller, ahhh the dread boarderX where MrsW hurt knee last year chasing smallW. That'll teach her not to run the whoopy-doos properly!
But tbh we love it, and will be going for it time and again this year...
Impressed with 30 mins from 1950 to Vanoise via Arcabulle - must be a no q day... either at Marmottes or Arca. I reckon it should be 26min + L'Ours queue going the other way - did you ever complete in that direction?
7 days, 16 hours... and counting...

Not liking the snow reports coming back, STILL no more snow?
I'm hiring the narrowest, stiffest, skis I can possibly find as well as taking an edge tool to do the edges each day while wishing I had my sl race skis

Off to catch the Ski train in just a few hours. Be in LA in by evening. Looking forward to it. Perhaps bump into (not literally I hope!) some other Snow Heads. Hope to post some snow reports here during the week.
Have a good one.

Blindside, thanks for that - a useful addition to the armoury of 1950 information!
Anyone booking direct with ITW or Radisson almost certainly won't get a discount, and to be honest I'd think it unlikely that the TOs would offer one : the car parking is a completely independent operator to the rest of the village.

This is getting boring...yet another day of bright sunshine and hard packed / icy pistes. Yesterday was in la Plagne for the day and found some of the pistes very icy indeed, funnily enough the bottom of the blues into Plagne Centre, the runs down from Bijolin and the return red to the VE which also had a load of stones...
Still if you are a skier its not all that bad, just totally rubbish for boarders - and really off-piste is just piste that hasn't been bashed rather than powder fun.
La Plagne about 50% busier than Les Arcs had been for the week..

Thanks Bertie for keeping us up to speed, even if it isn't great news.
I will have 2 cars for 2 weeks which worked out cheaper than transfers for 6 adults and 2 small children. I am planning on dumping the cars in the free carpark mentioned on Les Arcs net (one of the links) in either 1600 or 1800 and then getting the bus back to 1950. If we need one I'll ski down and get it. I'm not paying 300E+ in parking fees
