Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The Marquis' Well itself lies a bit less than halfway up between the top of the Ptarmigan Tow and the Summit of CairnGorm:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=300673&Y=804368&A=Y&Z=115

The snow field to which the spring has given it's name is the shallow bowl on a SW/NE axis that runs from near the top of the Ptarmigan Tow to just short of the Summit. As for spelling of Ciste Mhearaidh..... Not sure anyone has a definitive answer, indeed there is some doubt as to whether the small bowl currently referred to as Ciste Mhearaidh is the correct location or whether the snowfields below the Tor or both places should have that name. One reason is Cnap Coire na Spreidhe (literally 'lump of the deer coire'), if Coire na Spreidhe is not the bowl commonly refereed to as Ciste Mhearaidh then where is it? Confused

OS maps place 'Ciste Mhearad' (another common spelling) on the ridge between the bowl and the area of long lasting snow fields below the Summit Tor. A 1970s edition of the Forestry Commission's Glenmore Forest Guide uses both the Ciste Mhearaidh spelling and on a CairnGorm Piste map the spelling Ciste Mearaedh - a better reflection on the usual pronunciation as 'Mh' would normally (always?) give a 'V' sound similar to 'Bh'. Waits for Donald M to come along and correct me! Laughing

Thanks. Well I never - so it's a spring! You learn something every day, as they say! I wouldn't care but I've got the OS Map as well! (Must look more closely in future...wink. )

Anyway, all this talk of 120 turns from the top earlier this week, pus the snowy Ptarmigan webcam, has has got my feet itching - though it seems that the freezing level has risen a bit over the last 24 hours Confused .....

shoogly, not far for me to walk !! I was in the Chinese yesterday lunchtime where we sat watching the whole spectrum of skiing/boarding abilities pass by our plates of noodles. I have a Braehead session included with my all Scotland season pass but it hasn't arrived yet. Not sure yet where I am on Tuesday either but I'm pretty sure I'll be out this weekend though.

Look at the transformation in Glencoe's main basin since yesterday ... there looks like enough snow to run the upper drags !!

moffatross, from Glencoe:

Although it looks great on the cameras the many gullies and the rocky nature of the terrain at Glencoe means that we need a number of freeze thaw cycles and quite a bit more snow to be able to open for snowsports.

Maintenance

The access chairlift will be shut for the next few weeks while we carry out essential maintenance and health and safety checks on the chairs and cable......

kitenski, yep, I'd kinda hoped I could lazily cadge a ride on the access chair. Glenshee might be a better all around prospect for the weekend with snow to the road and with a less rocky base, fewer sharks lying in wait. This is the Glenshee view right now ...

Just seen today's cams Shocked Shocked - and am as excited as a child on Christmas morning!! We skinned up at Glencoe in April when the access chair was on and other lifts weren't - so a shame that the access chair is shut for maintenance......

And Jeeesus(!!) I've just seen the Nevis Range panorama cam! http://www.webcam-ski.com/webcams/interfaces/nevis-range/interface.php?pk_interface=276&m=images&r=panoramique

Need to check the forecast but methinks there could be four of us making the 600 mile round trip on Sat night for a spot of skinning on Sunday Very Happy.

May see you there moffatross? Will post an update on location if we decide to go for it.....
