Poster: A snowHead

The Dive is still shut - partly due to snow conditions and partly due to staff shortages following the dismissal of several members of staff a couple of weeks ago. It looked pretty good in there earlier this week and Patrol have been using explosives in there quite regularly so hopefully it will be open soon!

10cm at Lake Louise on Friday made for some nice skiing despite strong winds at the top. It snowed another 5cm during the day on Sunday. The pistes in Louise were good quality all weekend. Another 35cm is apparently forecast for today but I'm in work.

Another good day at Nakiska. A few freshies overnight and snowing all day. Dumping when we left. Slightly too warm though and a slightly wet kind of snow

Lake Louise was good on Sunday. Managed two laps of the Powder bowls putting in fully fresh tracks both times. Which given the size of the queues at the lifts etc was a pleasant surprise. They had a few problems with the lifts so initially it was hard to access areas and the "line-ups" were epic. By lunchtime everything had sorted it's self out and while the resort was pretty much tracked out the snow was soft and skiing pleasant.
Lots of issues with the roads currently - Sunday morning drive as unpleasant and lots of Highway 1, highway 93 to Radium etc closed for periods due to avalanche risk.

Back from Banff earlier today. Skiied LL on Thursday. The Front Side was in good condition but the real fun was to be had in the Powder Bowls and the Larch Area. The Boomerang Bowl still had untracked powder in places and the runs in the Larch Bowl (esp Rock Garden) were good fun. Very few queues (1 minute max) and sunny all day.
Skiied Sunshine on Friday. A chilly -26C in the car park at the bottom of the gondola at 8.45. Gondola had started late due to low temperatures and as a result none of the chairs were taking passengers until 9.25. Very cold standing around. Followed the sun round all day. Started on the Wawa chair and did some warm up runs and then up Mount Standish. There had been a few cms of snow overnight and this had made the conditions off the top wonderful. Did about 6 runs making fresh tracks each time. Then round to Lookout Mountain. Although well tracked the snow was still in great conditions. Delerium still closed. After lunch onto Goat's Eye Mountain. Simply superb. Skiing down through the trees and a great gully (Eagle Creek) all afternoon. Runs back down to car park in good condition. Often felt as though we had the mountain to ourselves.
Norquay on Saturday. First time there and at first I thought that I was going to be bored by lunchtime. And then we discovered the runs off the 2 man North American chair (left hand chair as you're looking at mountain). 30cm + powder, tracked but in super condition, very forgiving of my dubious technique. Until midday we were virtually the only people on that part of the mountain. After lunch discovered the runs off to the right of the Mystic Express. Mostly unpisted and great fun. More people about with ski clubs and schools in evidence. Was a long weekend (Monday was a public holiday) and people had clearly come out to the Banff area to take advantage. Much warmer today (a barmy -6C by mid afternoon!). Was told by someone on a lift that the gondola from the bottom of LL was out of action, which must have caused problems.
Anyone going out there in the next week or so is in for some great skiing but wrap up well. We were at a wedding on Sunday in Calgary and flew out on Monday. Not long enough.

A warmer weekend at Lake Louise with lows of -20C (ish) but highs in the -5 range. They had a couple of 10cm snow falls during the week and a dusting (few cm's) overnight Saturday - Sunday. Frontside starting to be a bit icy in the morning but it softens up just enough. Mens downhill closed in the mornings but nice and groomed in the afternoon. Bit of the bowls (Paradise chair area) starting to get some moguls but managed to have some fun on the steeper lines.
Weekend queues still epic at times to my eyes and compared to last year - plan to ski though lunchtime

One of the more interesting lines has (apparently) been skied at Sunshine Village recently

Just back from Banff - skied Lake Louise 5 days and Sunshine 1 day. Went out on 6th April and had a fantastic week. Booked last minute and got a great deal and conditions were much better than in Europe. They have had record snowfall all winter and more dropped while we were there. Tuesday our last day was ideal with blue skies. Main runs had been pisted previous evening, then several cm of fresh overnight. We got first tracks down Meadowlark. Skied with the Ski Friends in louise most of the week with their black group (other groups run too). Locals do free guiding and it lets you get through the trees and down some of the bowls without wondering where you are going as signing is quite poor. They used to take you everywhere when we were last there (2003) but now only on single black - no double black shutes - had to do those ourselves! Great skiing on Goat's Eye in Sunshine resort. If anyone is looking for real skiing at the end of the season its still cold and snowing proper snow in Canada. Their season runs into May. No queues either.
