Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

roga, he was saying he wanted to come over but didn't have time off. Also said that conditions in Scotland are better than in almost all of the Alps right now snowHead

Yup, that's what I've been hearing although the high level ones are okay I think.
Quote:
So if even Alpine locals want to come to Scotland...why are the resorts still deserted! Razz

Rotten publicity for starters!

No snowmaking so no guarantee of snow throughout the season so no publicity and many people forget there are resorts in Scotland?

Most people are used to cushy modern lifts and infrastructure and these days can't countenance anything that doesn't molly coddle them?

Some people have had one or two bad experiences in Scotland in the past, couldn't cope with the conditions and have moaned about it ad infinitum ever since putting others off?

Most people don't bother going until they hear on the news that there's snow or see it outside their windows in the Scottish central belt, they then inundate the resorts for a weekend and wonder why the infrastructure can't cope there are mile long lift queues as a result, they then vow to never return... have been there myself actually Embarassed

Most intermediate skiers (unlike boarders) have got used to terraformed motorway pistes in Europe and anything with the slightest whiff of natural terrain and roughness about it they can't cope with?

Climate change means there's no snow anymore in Scotland - must be true because The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and The Independent say it is!

Most people in the UK think the winter is over now!

Just random provocative thoughts, not all completely serious but some are!

Okay folks, it looks as if we're in for a lot more snow if the forecast is to be believed.

According to the BBC:

"The Easter period this year is going to be characterised by a cold Arctic wind which could bring snow to rival 1983. Once the cold airflow arrives the computer models suggest the cold air could linger well into April".

Snow to rival 1983!!!! Shocked

The Met Office have also issued a first warning as follows:

"Blizzards & Heavy Snow Fri 21 Mar
There is a moderate risk of a severe event affecting parts of Northern and Eastern Scotland. There is a potential for heavy snow to fall in these areas, especially over higher ground where strong winds may also lead to blizzard conditions. The risk increases during the second part of the day as colder air spreads southwards.
Issued at: 1112 Mon 17 Mar "

So, for those of us up in Scotland or heading up it looks like Friday may be rather snowy, after that let's hope the storm abates and we get to make fresh tracks in all that new powder that'll be up there - could be rather excellent! snowHead snowHead

I just hope I can get up to Fort William Friday morning!

Woohoo snowHead !! Very excited, although also hoping the journey will be OK. I guess the two sections that could be problematic for us are Shap and Glencoe, here's hoping they're clear enough to get through...

Is it purely cost that is stopping them adding snowmaking equipment?

Cost and lack of will and vision IMHO, the Winterhighland weather cameras and temperature reports have proved this season there have been plenty of snowmaking windows on Cairngorm.

For accuracy I should point out that The Lecht and Glenshee have some cannons but they're old, particularly in the case of Glenshee and there are issues with electricity and water supply I believe.

Anyway, being positive again it looks like the last thing they'll need in the next week of so is snowmaking - it's gonna dump! snowHead

I'm so seriously tempted by Scottish skiing over the Easter weekend. Not so tempted by the ten hour drive to get there Sad

I had a cracking day at Glencoe today.

It was quite firm underfoot in some places, some of it was the nice grippy type of ice you get though which wasn't a problem. There was also delightful windblown powdery stuff around.

There is just gallons of snow up there.

Again to those people who think Scottish ski-ing is pants - BOG OFF!

Roll on my next trip up north!

paulio, jonm, me and roga are flying from Bristol if you'd like to join us. Might be safer and quicker than driving if Northern England is affected by snow too. Hopefully it'll snow bucketloads on the Friday and then if its going to be very cold, it might be too cold to snow some more and we will have powder conditions in Nevis! Yippee. I think I'll definitely pack my balaclava now and goggles.

Roll on this Friday!

I wish I was. It looks like we're spending Easter in the Lakes with my Mum. We lost Dad last year so certain holidays she likes to have us around her at the moment.

Mind you, judging by the weather forecast, I'm not sure I want to drive south in horrible weather to spend a weekend stuck inside for most of it. There may be a glimmer of hope yet!!

I certainly had a great day today though. There is a small chance I might head up on Wednesday as well. I'll have to see how things go with work and stuff.

snowaddict, Sorry to hear about your Dad. Yes, I completely understand how your Mum feels about having her family around her at certain times of the year.

Hmmm, yes you could be right about the driving. Difficult one that. Ah well I guess we will all have to wait and see!

Hope you have a pleasant family break in the Lakes anyway.

Honestly, I'd hang on and check what the weather forecast is before commiting on such a long trip! Then dependent on which side of Scotland has the best weather you could either head to Cairngorm in the East or Nevis and/or Glencoe in the West. Glencoe has alot more natural terrain than Nevis, if you want wide, smooth pistes I'd head to Nevis. If you want a bit more undulations, and natural gullies etc head to Glencoe.

nick0861, if you want to met up with other snowHead s then head to Fort William/Nevis.

The weather is changing daily at the moment but the consistent pattern is very cold and snow. The latter varies from a bit of snow with sun to blizzards so it could be fanastic or it could be really severe and arctic - it's all up in the air... literally!

If you're looking for coduroy pistes and sunny skies you need to be cautious and definitely heed kitenski's advice, if you can cope with fresh snow under-ski and variable overhead conditions then I'd say go for it now Very Happy

Will probably start the journey thursday night, get as far as I can be bothered (gf doesn't drive so muggins is the chaufeur the whole way), stop at a travelodge, finish the trip friday morning.

Hopefully then half of friday + 2 full days, and a nightmare return leg on Monday. Hopefully it'll be worth it.

There is still time for me to bottle out of it, of course Smile

Paulio, how many of you is there and what will it cost you in fuel? Could you get to London and come up on the ScotRail Sleepers?

The sleepers are something that seems to have caught on with the climbing world but are just about completely overlooked in the snowsports community. If your travelling in multiples of two it means you'll have your own cabins (each cabin is 2 berth or if you can afford to splash out 1 berth cabins in First Class).

The Highland Sleeper has 2 or 3 cafe bar cars when it leaves Euston as well! Cool

Just the two of us. I looked into sleepers but the times weren't quite right for us, and there's still the Brighton->London and Glasgow->FortWilliam bits of the journey to contend with.

The car works out about the same, or a *tiny* bit cheaper, but with maximum flexibility.

Ask me what I think of the idea next Tuesday though Smile

If anyone is interested, on Tuesday 25th March departing London Euston there is bargin berths available to Fort William for £19 on the Sleeper!

Not any coming back though, but if you want to travel budget style, there is a Scottish Citylink coach service that departs Fort William at 7.10pm on say the 27th (Thurs) to Buchanan Street Bus station in Glasgow for £5 (arrive 10.05pm). A National Express overnight coach to London departs from there at 10.30pm and is available for £16.

In total the return trip could be done for just £40 travel costs, to get 2 days sliding on the West Coast (or more but cheapest tickets not available Friday evening on the coaches).
