lynseyf, For skiing any where in ski amade is excellent, maybe look at the Salzburg Superpass, covers ski amade and many many more resorts. For MTB there's endless choices all over, I've done lots of XC and single track around Schladming, Radstadt, Ramsau areas to name a few. For DH Schladming / Planai is the dogs bolloxs. 1000m of adrelinan, bumps, jumps, banked corners roots. Also this summer opened the tamer "flow trail" which is fun. Wagrain also has an excellent bike park, more mellow then Planai but a lot of fun. I hear Saalbach has excellent and extensive bike park. Checkout the "gravity card" it's a DH card that covers lots of bike parks across Austria (Planai and Wagrain included) and elsewhere. http://www.gravity-card.com/

lynseyf, If you are LMU you will struggle to find accommodation, the University of Applied Sciences has a better record and the Bundeswehr University at Ottobrunn has it's own campus accommodation. Average rents in Munich itself are 13 Euros per square metre. If you have motorised wheels you can get closer to the mountains and get that down to around 10 Euros. I live right out of town and pay 5 Euros
Unfortunately the LMU (Lüdwig-Maximillian Universistät) is in the most expensive part of town, where rents can be as much as 20 euro per square metre.

Samerberg Sue, I'm at TUM and don't think I'll be getting a car. I've been a student for the last 3 years though so am used to being skint

TUM supplies us with a lot of our work placement students! It is mixed in its locations - some departments out in the SW (Großharden) some central (Schwabing) and some out to the north at Garching. Deffo cheaper out Garching way. The public transport system in Munich is brilliant and biking is definitely the best way to get around when the weather is warmer.

I decided on Radstadt and was able to get a room at Haus Susanne (popular here, it appears)! I'm excited to get back down there. I'll be skiing alone with my 3 kids, so we'll be taking it slow and easy so I can keep everyone together. My husband is away right now, so we're on our own and the kids are normally in ski lessons on our other trips. Looks like my little crew will be doing some exploring in a new-to-us area. The kiddos have made one request to go to the Krapfenalm in Wagrain (our usual area, coupled with Alpendorf) so it looks like we'll have to head over there.
Is Zauchensee manageable for intermediate but not-so-fast skiers? I've been dying to get there and this will be our first chance.
One last piece of advice needed. Are snow chains required by law? I don't have them and for all of the trips we've made to St. Jo/Alpendorf over the years, we've never needed them. That said, I'm looking into renting or buying them as insurance for this weekend. I was curious what the law says though, just so I know.

Good choice, having a great time there this week.

Absolutely, you will have a blast.

Not sure, but you might get turned back if they are required and you don't have them. They were necessary for us this week.

Geepee, we'll be there late tomorrow night, depending on traffic. We'll say hi. I'll be the mom alone with three kids (they are 7, 9, and 11). I bought the kids season passes because of the great deal they offer pre-season. We got our money's worth already on our earlier trip, but having these passes in hand makes me want to come back again. Hubby is gone (for work) for most of this ski season so this skiing with three kids by myself thing is very new to me and I admit I'm a bit nervous. We'll be okay though. I may just look a little bit come Saturday. We've never gone sledding in the area, so we may check that out this trip.

novafan, you may be able to pick up a set of chains at one of the hardware chains like Bauhaus, Hagenbach, Lagerhaus, or Obi. That's where I buy mine (Obi) they cost me about 50 Euro 7 years ago and they have never been used in anger. If you have winter tyres and a sensible driving style, you usually manage to get to most places.
If you are in St Johann at the moment, there is an ÖMAC (Austrian AA) centre in town - it is just on the corner as you drive up on to the B311 from the Alpendorf road). They may have chains you can rent. The current amounts of snow made me glad I had them in the car last week, but even then I did not need them to get in and out of Haus Susanne's car park.

Bloody useless weather forecast. Was supposed to get some light snow today, which we did until about 5pm, but then the taps were turned on to full
It's dumping down BIG time, probably 10cm in last 2 hours at valley level. Just driven from Radstadt to near Schladming which was an intense drive. Just got away without chains on the drive up towards Rohrmoos, loads of cars were getting stuck. Radstadt town is groaning under the snow from a few days ago, the route to the famous haus suzanne has snow piled up above car height and that's without this fresh dump. Happy days. I'll post another report later on my ski tour and snow pit I dug.

waynos, had SUCH a wicked day up in Zauch, took my daughter out and she was literally waist deep in the powder , fantastic fun. First 2 hours were probably the best we have had this year. Was relatively quiet too, maybe cos it´s changeover day. Still snowing lightly when we came home and cold temps tonight and a bluebird day forcast tomorrow are looking sweet

kooky, Was excellent conditions at Schladders too, though surprisingly busy - I consider busy when more than 1 person in queue for a lift and I can't get a personal gondola to myself. Still snowing heavy here, sun has popped out once or twice but the snow seems to be winning. Should be an excellent few days coming up. I'll be skiing around Planai and Haus tomorrow, early start as if the sun does come out all the fair weather skiers will decided to mess up the lifts.

Just realised I should slip this in here rather than in my more usual Austria Snow Report thread!
Skied in the Hochkönig area today with a couple of friends. Fabulous snow conditions, plenty powder, about 30-40 cm alongside the pistes. Weather overhead wasn't so clement. It snowed part of the time and blew as well, cold on the face.
We had intended starting in Maria Alm but, thinking (probably wrongly) that some lifts might not be running, we set out with the new (for me) gondola in Hintermoos. It was my first time at the new set-up in Dienten too and I managed to take the wrong turn at the bottom, so that we had to ski the Gabühel piste twice. Here's the view down to Dienten, with the new ski bridge over the road, ski center and Bürglalm chairlift - a great improvement over the previous arrangement of guddling across the road to the T-bar.
The second run down the Gabühel was no loss, for the skiing was great anyhow and we stopped at the Almhäusl for refreshments, only to be trapped in the Schirmbar there by an avalanche . However, a rescue party soon removed the snow which had slid off the roof and we were on our way again.
With the weather deteriorating at times in the afternoon, we only skied as far as the Hochkönigalm and had lunch in the Liebenaualm near there. After another excellent run on the Zachhofalm piste (the first hadn't been so successful when two of us collided ), we set out on the return journey. Here's a photo taken on the way back looking down the Sinalcobahn (more properly known as the Hintermoosbahn - I had expected a special welcome on that lift, for I was called the Sinalco Kid on early trips to Austria because I drank so much of the stuff but it seems the Austrians have forgotten that ).
We were back in Maria Alm by three o'clock after an excellent day's skiing, the best snow I've seen for ages.

Nice report espri, definitely time to get back to the Hochkönig
Whoever changed the title I'd like to point out that Ski Amadé includes way more than just Schladming and the Gasteinertal! Title going back to original!
