And it's snowing
All the forecasts have it snowing all day, Meteociel and YR.no and Snow-Forecast predict around 25cm whilst NetWeather nigh on 45cm!
Was having major tech issues with the PTZ webcam yesterday and thought it had packed up, but have it back working - link is in the signature below.
In the three or four hours of admonishing software / hardware I set up the old static cam which is now working from the link below.

Looks like Ken's going to be busy all day snow clearing is driveway the way it's coming down now!

Heading here Jan 16th - was worried until this week.
Seems a fair amount of snow has come down and more forecast for next week - most sites are still showing low numbers of lifts/runs open ? What's the gen over there ?

@RhythMick, they are working to get stuff open as Ken and I witnessed yesterday on the Vallons.
I think with this snow that's falling now (and there's a lot) and the warmer weather forecast for the next couple of days they now they might be waiting for that to help consolidate the base and will mean a lot less work.
That said maybe they do have reduced numbers of pisteurs / lifties etc
I should imagine by the 16th you'll probably have picked the best week so far.

Sounding better and better for my visit from the 23rd, especially if the cold shift sticks around! Thanks for the updates and webcam maintenance.

Newbie to snowheads, but read back through this thread and THANKS for all the great photos and tales. I always thought the mountains would just be grey and dull in summer but it seems I was wrong - VERY tempted to come biking/walking to Serre Che next Autumn.

@Sharkymark, I don't know, I'm guessing he has. It does make the snow look a bit 'dirty' doesn't it?

We are booked to go at the end of the month but the current lack of snow in the southern Alps is worrying us. There is conflicting info on the web and whilst I know there has been some recent heavy snow I am also seeing that in the official serre che website that not many lifts and pistes are actually open. We like to ski high mileage and cover the whole area so if significant parts are not open that will impact on our enjoyment. Particularly concerned about the poor base snow at village level which may mean skiing back down to villeneuve is difficult. I realise things can change but there is a point in time in the next week where I want to explore our options with our tour operator and see if we can switch to somewhere in the northern Alps which seems to be doing better. We also planned to drive to montgenevre and Italy and they look to be doing even worse
Any Real and up to the minute info from anyone actually out there right now would be gratefully received...I can then have a meaningful conversation with the tour op (small company, very helpful, used them for several years, likely to be as helpful as they can be)

Looking on Snow-Forcast at the weathermaps the immediate area has had some of the best snow over the last week. The forcast for the next 7 days also favours the SW Alps as well. La Grave appears to have had, and be due the most in this current weather pattern.
THe problem is alot has fallen onto bare ground as there was no base at all, whereas normally by this week there would be several weeks of winter weather, so the new snow falls onto old snow.
If you are not going till the 23rd / 30th Jan ( you said end of month but not which week ) then alot can change between now and then and you might move to a different resort that gets no new snow at all. It is a gamble and without a crystal ball it is a total guess as whether it is really worth the expense and worry of changing to maybe a high altitude resort with glacier skiing.

@backhojo, we do a daily weather update and blog on the link below !
It's now looking very good - the snow falls that we had last week have now been consolidated by the rain and warmer temps which will provide a very good base, ok not a lot of fun for people just skiing this weekend.
And then next week is looking very promising if the forecast predictions come good - but they are predictions!!
Skiing down to resort Villeneuve has been possible since lifts opened!
And they are opening up more all the time and working on the links, so you can get back easily to Frejus and Arravet and looks like Pontilas should open this weekend, that said we've skied down a couple of times already this week.
I have not skied Monetier yet and with the above forecast that should on the cards for next week in the trees.
Club Alpine Briancon (CAF) are running an avy security session tomorrow that is open to all http://gazzzco.wix.com/neige-securite I'll be taking the OH
09:30 Edit Pontilas lift is indeed running and I see that Vallons is scheduled to open today which means links to Monetier will open with Cucumelle cahir

Thanks. We are coming 31st Jan so I guess there is 3 weeks to go, so that is hopeful. However only 30% of serre che runs are open compared to 75% in Val d'isere and 85% in courchevel. That implies the base is better in the northern Alps. Montgenevre is looking poor as well and hoped to ski there.
|
|

@backhojo, 30 out of 81 runs open as of tomorrow and with the snow coming this week I'm sure that number will change!
|
|
|
|
|
|
Was with a bunch of geezonaires last night and general opinion was that the lack of runs opening up must be due to pisteurs not being taken on etc
We're going up the hill later to see what it's like.
British Army in the village big time now http://www.awsa.org.uk/ex-spartan-hike/ and will be like this for the next three to four weeks. I heard that now Camp Bastion is no more, the Army Medical core http://www.awsa.org.uk/ex-proton-serpent/ who come at the end of the month will have an increase in numbers from 300 to 600 !!
Yesterday did an avy course with Club Alpine Briancon more on the link below.

I'm flying out to Villeneuve at the weekend and was wondering if there are any recommended shops for getting my skis serviced?
I'm not sure I'll have the chance to give them a proper seeing to before I leave but regardless, they'll probably need the edges done at the very least (I'm not sure if it's me or my cheap tool but I can never seem to sharper them nicely).
Fingers crossed the weather plays ball over the next week or so!

Fair bit of blasting going on this morning - we only have around 5-10cm of fresh in the garden.
Avy risk 4 above 2,000m and forecast for strong winds again so would doubt if links are open.
Meant to be snowing most of the day, but that's not happening at the moment.
Might nip up to Monetier this morning to lap some trees.

Hopefully 5-10 in the garden means more up the mountain!
@weathercam do you know if Riquet Sports do hand tuning? I have a snowboard with magnetraction (wavy edges) which don't really work with machines. Thanks

@leggyblonde, I'll ask Thomas, as he's the snow boarder in the team - when are you out ?
Just back down off the hill, drove up to Monetier and went up Bachas.
As ever forecast totally wrong and we were blessed with good viz and no snow.
Skied the pistes that were not pisted and in the trees. Conditions on and off in the trees by Chaume piste were great and then took the Etoile drag back up along with the British army who were all up there racing down the Stade.
Lower down off piste was a bit of a mare so stuck to the piste.
Yret and Cibouit will be closed all day due to high avy risk, though now see that Vallons is open along with the link, so that could well be skied out by tomorrow, shame, hoping they were going to keep that closed for another day.
Hey ho will be other days
Will post some pics later
