anyone skiing GM today? How much fresh is there and is pendant bowl open? Thinking of driving over to ski tomorrow if it's good.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Today was fantastic, viz was patchy but cleared at times, had some of the best runs of the season as with less peeps about things weren't getting skied out at all quickly.
Pendant is closed (mainly down to staff I think) as you can't get back up the chair. With that chair being closed no one is going down Chamois, which is stuffed with snow, but you can use the tunel to get back.
Definately worth driving out for tomorrow, viz should be better according to Meteo. Do it, you know it makes sense
Neh, neh, I'm here (as are casino & patrick2976) and you lot aren't (well most of you)

Fantastico! I will put the Kuro's in the car now... Can't convince any of my ski buddies to take a day off work so will be alone. Midget, if you or your buddies are out tomorrow and don't mind company it would be good to do a few runs with you.

Sorry just saw this post now. Did manage to get a couple of hours in this morning and they were great but I'm afraid I'm back at the desk in 'sunny' Yorkshire now
Still at least you will have had a good time, though they reckoned it may get cloudier in the afternoon, did that happen?
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Chamois was a great call - didn't realise how far down the bowl you can get and still traverse back to the tunnel. Went up to the top at midday and the front side of the glacier was amazing. It started getting tracked and softened up a bit in the sun later as did pretty much everything. However at 4pm I did the other glacier (turn left at bottom of stairs and then off to the right of the black piste) and the snow was still light on the long slope down towards the couloirs. And there was still space for fresh tracks. Superb day. A blanket of low cloud came in later but it sat at around 2500m so wasn't really a problem for the better snow further up. At the top it said there was 30cm of fresh snow but it felt like more. Off to Zermatt tomorrow where they reckon they had 1m on Tuesday. What a great end to what has been a fantastic season!

If anyone is in 2 minds we've just got back and I've posted a quick vid of the current conditions on GM this week up to and including Thursday 30th April...
Just had a call from Chamonix and despite it being now very busy there are still fresh turns (ie pretty localised) to be had off the top off Lognan GM, and the snows in good nick.
That's an update on the 9am phone call which was all "the off pistes unskiiable, the queues an hour long, why do you always get the best powder, grumble, moan".

Sat & Sun weren't too bad - though the top tickets line was a bit excessive. Yesterday & today saw a few cm of dust on crust making stuff skiable though variable vis & the main problem with TT was waitng for enough punters to show so they could be bothered running the cable car.
Vallée Blanche was still good on Sunday if a bit slushy towards the bottom. We did a version of the Gros Rognon and got a bit stuck at an icefall. Luckily we had a rope but unfortunately it wasn't long enough to rappel down doubled up so ended up as an offering to the Glacier God!
Happilly down on the Mer de Glace. The scenery on the descent is really stunning!
I'm planning to go again on Saturday. Will be alone so if anyone else is keen PM me.

bobinch, STOP IT, you are torturing me. Haven't been in the MBV for 8 days now which is my longest stay away so far in '09 . Still Kings Canyon & the Sierra Nevada Sequoia National Park in less than a week .
I'm all conflicted.
Freshies this morning on the Vallee Blanche. Must have been 25cm overnight.
Getting a bit warm down the bottom...
And only way out of the valley was with the via ferrata ladders!

Whats mid January usually like snow conditions wise? Worth a gamble that time of year for fresh snow etc? Does it usually put a lot of snow down that early in season or does feb tend to be the time the resort fills up with snow? Thanks for any help or advice on the resort!

Hopefully, as have got it booked this morning for the 9th Jan staying at the Les Balcons du Savoy apartments so fingers crossed it will have a good xmas dump for us, if anyone has any tips for the resort or nice bars restaurants please let me know!
Thanks

Mid Jan is usually cold! Not much sun in the Chamonix valley in Jan so bring warm clothes and head across to Brevent/Flegere or Le Tour (especially in the mornings) if you want some sunshine!

Stayed in Les Balcons a few years ago and it was nice then, can't see it having gone down since so you should have a nice base.
Last year in Jan it was brass monkeys, but snow was fine (you would be very unlucky to have anything but this in Jan).
Nice bars and restaraunts - I'm sure there is some stuff on that earlier in this thread, but it's personal taste (if I recommend anywhere someone will contradict me).
As the Brevent lift is so close to your apt (and together with Flegere the sunniest spot) I can see you spending a lot of your time there, but don't forget GM and Le Tour are worth the bus ride (head to Le Tour in poor conditions, to tree ski down the Vallorcine side).
Enjoy

Jan 09 was down to -16degC when we were there.
Awesome snow at night and good sunshine during the daytime. Flegere and Tour were magical.

Forecast to stay warm for the next 2 weeks. Not great really. Fingers crossed it gets cold and wet in November...

Yep, it snowed pretty heavily yesterday across the region and more forecast for the rest of the week and weekend. Best get the 2009/2010 thread started!
I agree it's time to close this thread down for a sparkly new 09/10 season thread....calling a mod....
