RLTP stop being cheap and buy some extra luggage space so your wife can bring the clothes she needs
|
You need just the same layers, really, just adding more or fewer of them depending on the weather. And some walking boots for your wife. The holiday will be far more pleasant for her, Rick, if she can stroll in the sunshine and meet you for lunch on a sunny terrace. Will she try a bit of snow-shoeing?

Just trying to figure out what to pack more than anything. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday look like t-shirt weather! Still uncertain about the potential cold spell coming in towards the end of next week though. We have only got 1 hold baggage between us as Anna isn't skiing so need to pack accordingly.
I will have a look at that link later on, thanks. |
A T shirt a day regardless, then pack 2 long sleeve layers and 1 fleece layer, should cover most/all eventualities???

It looks like it's going tropical on Monday & Tuesday! A nice top up of fresh snow between the 19th and 23rd would be perfect.... please!!!!

I'm not sure that anyone is yet promising a top up nice though it would be as serre chevalier seems to be forecasting temperatures in the mid teens. Never skied in a t- shirt before. First time for everything

dan100, just be careful if you do.
The snow can get quite granular with all this freeze-thaw, and those granules can cut up your arm something awful if you fall.
I know from experience.

I suspect I wouldnt anyway - I feel the cold. I have got a light weight soft shell so I would ski in a base layer and that if it gets too warm.
Think more a case of factor 50 for the face if its warm as forecast.

I am off to Val Thorens on Saturday for a week (with a three valleys lift pass). Any idea what the snow is going to be like? Pretty worried it will be slushy now the weather has warmed up!

Stone_Roses, Absolutely fine above 2300m - below that hard in the morning becoming softer - depending on aspect of course. Relax you chose the highest (big) resort in the Alps!

This morning's GFS has slipped colder weather back a couple of days to the end of next week. It remains in the low res section of the output so remains pretty uncertain at this point.

Still looks like a brief cooling down Sunday for northern austrian alps with a little snow but not as good as it looked a couple of days ago. Maybe I'll get one day of wet fresh snow followed by some spring skiing. Still better than the alternative office environment.

Like dan100 says: the weather is lovely, you're in the mountains, relax and enjoy.
You can picnic in comfort.
At last it is sensible to sit outside the restaurant.
Sort out your rickets.
And Stone_Roses, slush is great fun (way better than horrible hard early morning corduroy)
Just power through it and grin as you go, with the spray flying high out behind.

There is some good spring snow off-piste on South facing slopes around midday, and sheltered North facing aspects high up are still powder (although you might have to hike a while to find some fresh tracks now!)

I am really looking forward to my trip to tignes on Sunday for a week. The weather will be fantastic for the kids and the wife and there will be plenty of skiing going on. I am not interested in long lunches and sun bathing, that is what the summer holiday is for, I am looking forward to some great piste skiing and boarding. There may not be any fresh powder or off piste but I will still be caning it from 9-5 every day with great visibility in warm weather.

dan100, Jonpim, no I am struggling with everyone else's doom and gloom (don't tell me that it's not evident heh heh heh).
I am looking forward to not having to be in the first bin, spring snow, slushy bumps and sunny old times in general. What is not to like about this time of year, particularly after the last two springs that seemed to involve grubby weather at least at weekends.
Must get the vacuum flask out the garage for the lunchtime rosé.

Just seen the avi forecasts for tomorrow for the Beaufortin, Haute Tarentaise and Vanoise its 2 changing rapidly to 4 between 1000 and 1200. So if anyone is planning a long walk for fresh tracks (there won't be any powder) get up before sunrise and make sure you are down well before lunch.

chocksaway, just read that bulletin (Beaufortin) out of curiosity as down here we're still on 2 though not too clever to be climbing S/SE facing slopes much after 11:30.
Yesterday I did a big tour, climbing predominately S/SW facing slopes from 1550 to 2750 then going off the "back" on to NE facing where I did ski a fair amount of un-tracked powder.
Last part of the ascent was quite gnarly and used ski crampons for added security but has to be said was probably one of my best ski tour days as ski conditions were so much better than I had hoped for, and I did the whole thing tout seul which adds to the adrenalin factor
I'll post this photo to show the slides (not a trip report, you can find that in the Serre Che thread), though these in shot are basically the rocks heating up and snow sliding off, but in the bowl out of shot there was a larger one, and the route was to go over that cornice in the middle of the photo but I didn't fancy that so climbed higher to get in above it and was sure would not be too much in the way of rocks/cliffs (beauty of Goggle earth along with maps in route planning the night before).
Temps are forecast to ramp up Sunday / Monday and I doubt if I'll be going touring, though this past week has been classic.
And Rob Mackley, I just looked at next Sat (22nd March) and there is heavy snow forecast for here , now we all know that looking that far forward is no means a certainty, however I'm a great believer in sods law, and do think it could be ironic as I have five mates* coming out then for the week, guide booked for a big week of ski touring in the Queyras
* and one we do refer to as the snow god as when ever he turns up he brings the snow!

yes I'm back out on 25th for my yearly Touring week before Easter Hols , don't really know what I want , last two years have been too changeable and I have really been jealous of the settled weather but really could do with it cooling down a bit , so here's the dream , it can Snow on and off next weekend until the 25th then cool springlike weather please , don't want much do I
