So the boarders are heading to the train and the skier is skinning - could it be that skiers are just plain tougher and far more hardcore ... or are they mad?
It's obviously possible to pick your way down to the bottom (or up to the top) by the fence line which is pretty good this early in the season!
Gun Barrell looks prety good too, the burn is filled in properly by the looks of it, as is the one on the White Lady - again pretty impressive this early in the season.

The Ptarmigan cam has been moved a bit now giving us this shot:
Good to see skiers and boarders in the shot - I reckon the person on the left of the group of 3 with a yellow jacket on is Hilly (Helen), who has skied the mountain at least once a month (often more) for the last 13 months - something of a legend is Hilly
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

So there we go, first day of the (lift served) 2010/2011 season in Scotland over, second one pending - here's an update from the Cairngorm Mountain website:
Quote:
Welcome to CairnGorm Mountain
After just a gap of 145 days, we're back sliding around!!
Snowsports - Updated Saturday 13th Nov 2.40pm
Snowing lightly at all levels. Wind NW 10mph, Temp -1c.
A good first day with light winds and reasonable visibility. We will open for snowsports tomorrow - Sunday, with just the train for uplift. Some limited piste preparation has been made where possible, the best route is down the Traverse, 105 and then the Gunbarrel. The Cas is also pretty good. The first two ZigZags are skiable (watch for rocks on the outside) and then cut accross to the Gunbarrel. The White Lady has been well used today but there has been no prep' done on it. It will be as you find it! Care required in places as some rocks visible. Intermediate and experts only, conditions not suitable for beginners. We may open for snowsports on Monday and review for Monday skiing will take place on Sunday - watch the web site for a decision.
Ticket prices for snowsports will be set the same as funicular day tickets for this weekend as displayed below.
Season tickets from 2009/2010 and also new 2010/2011 passes will also be valid.
Local residents for this weekend only can avail of our £1 special offer advertised in this weeks Strathy - (must show utility bill as proof of local residency along with the cut-out voucher) either to get a £1 funicular ticket or a £1 ski ticket.
Hire : No hire is available onsite, please hire before arriving up the mountain.
Opening times : Cas Bar & Ticket Office open at 10:00 first train up at 10:20, last train up at 15:20 and last train down at 16:00. Trains running on demand.
No mention in that bbc article of the resort & mountain not being ready for ski hire yet. Hope people who haven't got own kit don't turn up without reading the advice on Cairngorm's website.

moffatross, saw quite a few people who seemed to be hiring in Aviemore from Nevisport. Great day , White Lady was the best snow , almost spring like once below the tunnel mouth. It was snowing when I left , and was raining , snowing then sleeting in Aviemore for at leat 2 hours afer dark so should be a nice fresh top up for all tomorrow , have a great day , I'm at Hillend gate judging at the last dry slope race of the year, I know where I would rather be.

roga, I'm the only skier in this picture , amongst the boarders and having to take a detour as they are sitting in the middle of the piste...

moffatross, good point there, let's hope not eh or they'll have to head back into Aaviemore to get hire there!
Winterhighland, grear pics - hope you had a great day and were thinking of those of us unable to get up
Scot_Ski, I see you - BTW I have no sympathy whatsoever, as you got a day in today - I'm at a dry slope tomorrow myself but am instructing ... mind you I'd rather be doing that than judging at a race lol ... pennance

Scot_Ski, that's good news about the hire & presume the gantry lights on the Glenmore road were letting people know.
It was good to see Alan's picture showing the track back to the car park was being used too.

sethpistol, looking at the webcams the upper mountan at Glencoe is looking absolutely awesome at the moment with the gulleys getting pretty damned loaded, it seems to have caught a lot of fresh in the last day or so.
Unfortunately though I don't thin they'll be opening anytime soon, they've just started recruiting winter staff so I guess they need to finish that process and train up any newbies prior to opening day - good for a hike though!
scotia, have a great time

roga, thanks!
Might head to Glencoe for a hike mid-week to assess the current snow situation and grab a couple of pictures, watch this space!
Bit limited what I can do on my compact camera while skiing about with no tripod! Anyway in the excitement of the snow over the past couple of days I overlooked the fact that we've started CairnGorm Mountain's 50th Season!! Winter 2001 was the 40th and final year of the White Lady Chairlift, so we're into the tenth winter of the Funicular...

Great day today with my youngest boy. Quite busy but well worth it as unlike some Cairngorm locals who've skied there every month this year, we haven't skied there since June. We didn't get on the snow until 12.00 and were off by 3.30 but still managed to get in 6 runs from the Ptarmigan (top station) to the car park in that time. That amounts to a cheeky 9.500 feet of vertical and about 12 miles. Not bad for a gloomy Sunday afternoon in mid November.
Just come back from our long weekend in the fleet valley near gatehouse of fleet, solway coast. There was a little bit of snow on cairnsmore of fleet 750m but nothing anywhere else.'driving on the a75 looking towards the moffatt hills they looked like they received a fairly big dump, all White!!!

Ricklovesthepowder, you were right in the firing line of that Atlantic storm where you stayed on Thursday night. Must have been a bit wild eh ?

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. By the sounds of things the winds were much worse here in Manchester than up there. Weather has been great up there though, only rained at night but last night there was a frost and the car was all iced up.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

moffatross, I don't think I saw you today? I was in a bit of a daze all day. Some great skiing to be had, some terrible skiing to be had
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

glasgowcyclops, no that's the young 'un & he's using a beaten up pair of old Rossi's I bought him for 40E from a ski hire shop in L2A at Easter. It's my oldest lad has your old Dynastars & believe it or not he was in XScape at Braehead today with his pals but did tell me this evening that he loved them & managed to do some backwards hops and 360's.
scotia, in a daze ... I thought you were done with all that student stuff It was difficult to see anything much though wasn't it, especially when the snow set in. Did you get any photos ?

moffatross, I think I have 1 that I'd bother uploading Will get round to it tomorrow. It was properly dumping at times and there's plenty snow up there for the crew to work with to fill in runs. Hopefully they can manage some decent farming over the next week.
