Last night there was some light snowfall. In total since Sunday morning 15 cm have fallen. On the hard soil and with the hard wind the new fresh snow outside the pistes has blown away for a large part. At other places the have blown up in so-called snowdunes and on the ridges in snowslabs. At was more than 4 weeks ago that is was possible to go through the white powder. The whole day remained cloudy and misty, but sometimes came there openings in the cloudcover. Above the 2500 meters a strong wind caused the closure of several lifts. This season has to suffer quite a lot of stormy weather and temporary closed lifts. The temperature was today on 2000 meters a few degrees above zero. Generally snowfall coming from the northwest goes in advance with a temporary temperature rise. The forecasts for the coming 24 hours diverge from 10 cm up to one meter snow. Tomorrow evening we know more .................!

The expected big dump was just less than 20 cm! During the night and in the morning untill 09.00 it snowed. Suddenly at 09.30 the sun appeared and sun and small clouds stayed there untill 14.30. There was less wind and the snow stayed in place. All mountains and rocks are again covered with snow. Cause by the avalanche safety activities it toke some time untill all lifts were running. Avalanche danger 4/5 and the well-known blocked yellow/black flag was in top. The snow outside the piste was fully in use and it lasted not long before you could see the traces everywhere. At the end of the afternoon the clouds came down, the sight diminized and snowing started again. After two hours it stopped. The result was an impressive (!) 2 cm extra snow for today.

Thanks for the update 123, really appreciate the detailed report.
One quick question, I've never been to Les Menuires before, how long does it take via the Mont de la Chambre Chair from La Coisette to Val Thorens?

There are several possibities to go from Croisette to Val Thorens
The quickest way is by car :
9 km , 10 minutes, Freeparking P4 at Virage du Caron, here you can buy a ticket and have a choice of three lifts. Two of them brings you in the VT-area
By ski/board the most common way :
Go up with TSD Menuires in 5 min and next TSD Mont de la Chambre in 12 minuten. On Mont de la Chambre go to the right for about 500 meters and then to the right to blue piste Pluviomètre. At the end go left and after about 500 meter you will enter Val Thorens via a bridge over the D117 (road between Les Menuires and Val Thorens). Going down from Mont de la Chambre to Val Thorens can take hours if you stop for the views, take a breath or take pictures. For a normal skier/boader you can do it in less than 10 minutes

There was no new snowfall this last night. During the day it was sunny with sometimes big clouds. The valleys of Méribel and Courchevel were filled up with clouds. The temperature has drop for more than 5 degrees since yesterday. The pistes are in a perfect condition after the snowfall and the maintance of last evening and night.

Untill three o'clock in the afternoon the weather was nice and sunny. After that time light clouds came down from the tops into the valleys. At certain lift there were written warnings "forte chutes de neige" for Friday and Saturday. It clear we will have "bad" weather the next two days. Or "good" weather for the visitors who will come next week.

The bad weather arrived today. In the morning it started with 10 cm snow. Around noon the temperature rized and the snow changed into wet snow and later on, during a short period, into rain. The wind increased and sometimes it was storming. Most lifts were closed due to the wind in combination with the high avalanche risk.
The forecast for to-morrow is also bad weather and for that reason everybody was packing and went home.
During the evening the temperature dropped about 5 degrees and the snowing stopped (temporary?).
Below 1800 meter it was raining for nearly the whole day.

Left today. Yesterday was snow all day. Very tough conditons with thick wet snow and strong winds. Loads and loads fell it was crazy. Stopped briefly overnight but continued again for the drive home out of resort. Massive amount of much better snow. Over 48 hours it seemed more than the year I saw 1 metre in 2 days in Soldeu, Andorra.

Last night and this morning it snowed again. About 30 cm of fresh powder came down on the pistes. At the end of the morning and the beginning of the afternoon we were surprised by some short periods with a little bit of sun. But very soon the sun disappeared behind the clouds and the haze. The sight was sometimes very bad and there was hardly no wind at all. The temperature settled around freezingpoint and in the afternoon some degrees below zero. The avalanche risk was the reason that all lifts to the summits were closed and so the connections between the valleys. Under 2000 meter the pistes consists of ice, due to the rain of yesterday, with a thick layer of fresh snow. At the end of the day it started snowing again.

After a few days in my own country I am back in Les Menuires since yesterday night.
Today I started my 61th day of this season 2008/2009 in the snow. It is never boring going up and down the mountains.
It was a lovely day with plenty of sun, blue skies, good snow, no wind and a temperature just around freezing point.
The pistes are in a good condition although the current snowlayer is less thick than the average of the last years.
Perhaps the weather during next Monday/Tuesday will change this situtation (?). Off-pistes there is enough snow but virgin powder can hardly be found.

The same beautifull weather as yesterday. At the end of the day the change of the weather became visible. High clouds from the north were entering the 3-Vallées.
On the circuit of Val Thorens old ordinary cars were racing around. In the centre of Val Thorens Mercedes was showing their new GLK -series.
Starting tomorrow and untill the end of the season the lifts will be open 20-30 minutes longer.

The weather was less brilliant than yesterday. Sometimes it was completly clouded and sometimes half clouded. The sunset was beautifull with large dark clouds. The snow and the pistes are in the same good condition as during the days before.
The new openingtimes of the lifts will start on febrary 7th!

Last night and this morning it was storming. Windgusts up to 100 km/h were registered. Most lifts were closed during the morning.
From 14.00 some lifts opened again. Loud explosions could be heard due the operations to make the pistes avalanche safe.
Sometimes it was sunny and in the sun and out of the wind it was a pleasure to be outside. On 2000 meter the temperature was around freezingpoint. Now we are waiting on the same amount of snow that already fell in the north of France, Belgium and England.

All lifts and the connections with the other valleys were open again. Above 2400 meters there was still a strong southernwind (föhn).
The relative warm wind caused a temperature rise during midday above freezingpoint. On the lower south slopes the snowcondition was a little less then perfect. The whole day was semi clouded, but the sun was able to shine between the clouds. Some lifts had waitingtimes of nearly ten minutes. New snow has not fallen yet!

It was a very grey day with heavy clouds and a lot of wind and at high altitude even storm. Most of lifts stayed closed. And at the open lifts there were big crowds with people waiting on their turn to go up. The temperature is unchanged (too) high for this time of the year.
It is a 2 hours drive from here to Val d'Isère. At this place the World Championships Ski are started on February, 2 nd and wil last untill February, 15 th. A lot of info in French can be found on the site : http://skichrono.com

After a lot of days with föhn today the wind turned to the north. Since last night and during the whole day it is snowing. Mostly light snowfall and roughly 10-15 cm in total. On the pistes the sighting was limited to 50 meters due to the mist. On Saturday it is usely quiet and so this day with snow, haze and bad sight. Typically a day with pistes for your own and a world that ends at the tips of your skis. From today to the end of the season the lifts will stay 20-30 longer open.

Just back - conditions were fab as we left, fresh powder and still falling. Lucky lucky folks heading out this or next week! Even last week though conditions in the main were excellent, the slopes are keeping the snow really well (except in meribel, which was a slush pit down low as usual) and grooming, especially in courchevel, was impressive. Only icy/bare patches were on the bruyeres side slopes of les menuires, where the wind is taking its toll, the blue back to the bruyeres gondola was probably in the worst condition and that should be fixed by the dump this weekend.
trip report later...

The first week of the french schoolholidays has been started. There are lots of children and youngsters on the pistes. The weather conditions were not good on this Sunday. It was cold and misty with sometimes a visibility of less than 25 meters. The temperature is 5/6 degrees lower than on the days before. During the last 24 hours a new layer of 25 cm of snow has been fallen.
According to the local newspaper it was on Saturday afternoon very crowded on the N90 between Albertville and Moutiers. Between 16.00 and 20.00 the Récita ( Régulation de la circulation Tarentaise) was operational. These are the trafficlights just before Aiqueblache that controls the trafficflow into the Tarentaise area. From exit 37 at La Léchère only cars were allowed with wintertires and/or snowchaines. More than 34.000 vehicles passed Moutiers on their way to stations.

This morning started with clouds. During noon there was a short time a piece of blue sky visible. In the afternoon the clouds came back again and there was very light snowfall. The temperature was just below zero and there was less wind. The visibility was bad and this made it not possible to fully enjoy the new powder.
This evening and tonight a strong storm will pass over France from SW to NE. The storm will not reach the Alps, but perhaps it will bring some extra snow.

Last night it was more than 4 degrees above freezing point. At the end of the night the snowfall started and lasted uptill now. Mostly light and sometimes some heavier snowfall. The thickness of the total layer cannot be estimated, because the wind is blowing the snow everywhere. The circumstances on the piste were far from ideal. Wind, snowfall, bad visibility and closed lifts made it not attractive to be outside. Moreover during day the it became colder and at 18.00 the temperature has dropped to -8 degrees. Real winterconditions!

Wind, bad visibility and low temperatures. During the main part of the day the sky was covered with clouds. Sometimes the sun came for a short period between the clouds. The toplifts were opened after noon. Most skiers and boarder were concentrated on the lower pistes. On several places the snow has been blown up and on other places the snow has nearly disappeared. During the last 48 hours 50 cm of fresh snow has come down. On the pistes there is a lot of powder and outside the pistes the conditons are also very good.
Today we have reached the middle of the season. After 81 days since November , 22 th we have to go another 81 days untill May, 2 nd. To characterize this first part of the season : wind, storm and closed lifts. About the snow, the sunshine and the temperatures we cannot be unsatisfied!

Bad weather today. Cold, -10 degree at noon, mist, light snowfall. In the morning less wind, in the afternoon strong winds.
