Hells Bells, no, I am disappointed. Our group is going to Sestriere and we (the 4 who booked Club Med) can't seem to find any other hotel there that we fancy. Must look harder and extend search to chalets, I guess. It's a bit of a bugger as the holiday was all sorted with lessons and ski pass all in and now we have to start from scratch. And we got it cheap by booking early. Grrrrr!

I have never stayed at Club Med but I have sneaked on the coach a few times in Chamonix and managed to scavenge a couple of really nice free meals, incl. drinks and in one case a show. We were once joined at the table by the magicians assistant and I thought the game was up, but......
PS hope your holiday works out.

Yes Maggi looks like they've canceled mine also. No email but my phone was off all day and I have just noticed a voice mail on there asking me to make contact with Club Med with some urgency.
I am very disappointed especially as you will remember there was forum member on here last Jan. who warned that it would be happening. Therefore they knew and still sold the holidays.
I am not as badly inconvenienced as you are as our group of three were booked with Club Med therefore we can all relocate. I wish you the best of luck with your dilemma.

palumbex, I have just found this press release.
Quote: |
Paris, 15 September, 2010 – Club Méditerranée today announced the sale of its 3-Tridents resort in
Sestriere. The disposal is part of the Group’s strategy of moving its Italian resorts upmarket, initiated
yesterday with the launch of the 5-Tridents project for the Cefalu resort in Sicily.
Located on the internationally famous Via Lattea ski area, the 267-room, two-building resorts in
Sestriere was sold to Italian hotel and tour operator Aurum. Owned by the Naples-based Orofino
family, Aurum Hotels operates 13 seaside hotel complexes, mainly in Sardinia and Campania.
Built in 1931 and acquired by Club Med in 1975, the historic Sestriere resort no longer met 3-Tridents
resort standards and, given its architectural features, could not be cost-effectively upgraded.
Club Méditerranée has confirmed the strategic importance of Italy as a destination, which it feels has
considerable upmarket and luxury potential. Its redevelopment will begin with the opening, in July
2012, of the new 5-Tridents village in Cefalu.
In line with this strategy, a number of other sites are being considered for future projects. |
Thanks for your sympathy . Yes, it's a bit of a rum do that they knew they were selling and still took our money!!!!!

You know maggi I promised myself when I was younger that I would never return to a holiday destination no matter how much I enjoyed it. I have broken that rule a few times I must admit but at least now I can look forward to discovering somewhere new to me.
The press release is interesting in as much as they state that their facility no longer met with their own standards. If this is so then their other resorts must be as good if not better than Sestriere. So onward and upwards.
By the way, did they offer you anything as a sweetener to book with them elsewhere? This would be handy info. for me to have if I am to try bargaining with them tomorrow. Or was it just cancel, refund and goodbye?

palumbex, we booked through Iglu, not direct. They offered us Club Med Serre Chevalier at the same price we paid for Sestriere or our money back. But I don't know whether it was more or less expensive . Anyway, it's no use to us as our friends will be in Sestriere. Good luck, anyway!

Yes Maggi I thought this would be the case as they are both served by the airport in Turin so they would not have to incur the expense of re-booking flights with Thompson Fly. I am hoping they might offer all of their three trident resorts at no extra cost but I doubt that they will. Serre is currently on Iglu at over £100 more than I paid so it's not a bad offer really.
I've stopped fretting now anyway. I will drop a message on here when I have things sorted. Good luck to you too.

Ok. So I was in touch with Club Med today. They offered a full refund or a switch to Serre Chevalier. I had a look at Serre on the internet and I must say it looks really nice. The ski area seems to be very highly rated and the Club Med facility looks really nice too. Serre would have been more expensive initially but as there was no extra charge I took the offer gladly. I really enjoyed the whole Club Med thing last year so it was an easy decision for me. They also said I could book any of their resorts as an alternative and I would only have to pay the difference between the Serre holiday price and the one of my choice..... not the difference between the Sestriere price and the one I chose.
All in all pretty shady selling practice in the first place but I can't say I am unhappy with the deal.

I booked with Iglu last year. I was not overly impressed with any of the two agents I dealt with. One of the ladies was downright belligerent. It makes me smile to look back on it now but at the time I would have canceled if I could have done so without loosing so much money.

Their situation makes mine seem like only a slight blip. I actually can't wait to go to Serre now. I hope it is not too long before you are in a position to look forward to your holiday too.

LAst year, January Holidayto Montgenevre (booked 3 weeks before departure) - Chalet Hotel £280, ski carriage £15, lift pass £160 (ish), spending £250 - total under £700. Based on previous years this was expensive.
Not booked yet, waiting until December to where the snow and the best deals are - Ski hols, while important to me are secondary to the rest of the Family, so have to take other trips as well - I have not paid over £300 for travel, hotel & food in the last 15 years.
Does that make me a cheapskate?

Fight to Geneva £120 mid January. This is our first ski holiday that we have had kids free (they have all flown the nest ) We are thinking of waiting and getting late deal on a catered chalet although never having stayed in one don't know how to go about finding them! Hope to get something good quite cheap if we wait until last minute as we are flexible about where we ski.

ruthie, up until 3 seasons ago, we always waited till the last min before booking to get a give away price, used to use chalets direct, book mark a number of chalets early and keep an eye on the number of bookings and prices, some companies only show special offers about 2 weeks before. Wait it out if you want the best price do not panic and book to early, there is always space avaialble in off peak weeks.
IMHO always phone and haggle a bit for last minute bookings rather than just booking the internet price.
Last year I had only a days notice before going paid 199 (list price was 750) for catered chalet all food and wine inc, buy hey I had an unfair advantage, biggest cost for the 10 days was the fuel to drive my myself down there

Hi all,
Banff, Canada.
Booked with Igloo, TO is Inghams.
End of January for 14nts
£875 flights/transfers/ room only
5 days free evening meals.
Lift pass 10 days £433!
Ski carriage £35
2011 £1343.
Compared to last Canadian trip at same time of year in 2009
£450 for flight and accomms,
£15 ski carriage
£310 10 day pass
2009 £775
And spent about £450 total for the 2 weeks on eating out every night with booze plus breakfast and lunch etc.
It would have been more this year , but the TO have scrapped the 2 in a room under-occupany (at the moment anyways!) which brings the price down considerably.

For half term, my daughter (15) and me, in St Anton.

£120 approx for rail transfers
£450 for SC apartment
£80 for overnight in Zurich on the way back as we are flying home on Sunday
£280 for lift passes
+ food and drink
pretty good for peak week in a top resort

Usually go last minute or do an early booking bonus if I can get organised in time and end up spending upto about £850 total (not including ski hire). I either go HB or catered but have done a couple Club Meds in the last 5yrs. Club Med have always worked out my cheapest ones. I never go for luxury but always insist on ensuite and being near the slopes (just as a price guide).
Decided to go Club Med again this season and booked mega early for Sestriere going in Mar 2011. Cost about £740 for 7 nights including flights, transfer, full board, drinks, lessons, lift pass and ski carriage.
Like others I have now had that holiday changed to Serre Chevalier. Went there a couple of seasons ago and loved it so actually quite pleased. Although I think it was naugty of them to not warn people at the time of booking but outcome for me personally has been great.
I would say £1700 is quite high unless it is pure luxury and half term. Hope you find something to suit all and that's less.

£778 per person for the week inc flights manchester to Innsbruck, Transfers, 4star Hotel Erhart inc breakfast & 5 course dinner and a 7 day lift pass.
Thats to Solden > some like it some hate it . . . We like it as intermediate skiers
We're taking our own gear but some bargains to be had if booked direct with the resort.
I think that's a cheap weeks skiing!
Oops forgort to say, thats flying out 12th March 2011

Zinal end of Jan - Flights £80, Car Hire £80, S/C chalet £180 - £340 in total. I figure £100 for breakfasts/dinner in chalet plus £200-£250 spends and whatever the lift pass is. Should come in well under a grand all in.

So I recon that as a group of 13 peeps you can sort yourself out for under €750 per person for 7 nights chalet board, ski pass, equipment hire and transfers from Salzburg airport to ski Amadé...
Now that is based on half-term prices... off peak would be much cheaper!
