Someone mentioned the la plagne webcam as an example and while everything is white, it only takes like 1cm of snow on the ground to do so!

And that is the problem - the webcams are all green and brown! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! All we wanted was 1cm to make us feel better!

Its depressing looking at the webcams for the Alps. We are on the cusp on December and not a flake in sight.......unless of course you are like me and have a 2nd trip booked for Andorra! (yes theres snow in Soldeu!)

I'm pretty sure the alps will be alright for snow this season. Even if there's below average, there's always going to be enough to ski on.
however, I do wonder (though still too early to be concerned) what the scottish winter will bring us. It's been unseasonably warm here for the past few weeks now, and all of the snow from a few weeks ago is totally gone. really hope something arrives soon and a base can begin to embed itself into the hills.

It has 24 days to dump some serious snow, preferably in the VT part of 3V, or I shall cry quite a lot.

I was booked for Zermatt for new year 2008, and watching the webcams every day with a growing sense of dread thinking 'ah well, there'll be a few stretches of sheet ice on the glacier at least' and then on about December 2nd WALLOP. Everything went white, stayed white, and all but about 2 distant pointless drag lifts were open when we arrived.

As I posted in another thread. Doing my bit for the environment and recycling posts.
I've just spent a very good day in Laax Switzerland.
The locals are working their balls off getting snow poles in place and road barriers up, If they don't know when it's going to snow who does?
I had a good walk up some pistes and yes they were green but they were hard with frost on then still at 4 in the afternoon. As you know it's the "permafrost" that keeps the snow by acting as a big fridge.
I am not worried at all.

Until this Indian summer ends it is not worth running the snow canons on slopes that take any sun or low level slopes. it was 18C at 900m on Sunday. The French "agriculture" forecast (separate system to Meteo France) says that the current weather is unlikely to break in the next 7 days but it will get a bit colder in the Northern Alps.
Maybe some snow before the end of next week.

I'm starting to see precipitation coming into the apline areas on the models I use around the 19th/20th (southern French Alps and Piedmont) and for the whole of the northern Alps from the 23rd onwards. OK, it's only a hypothetical model at the moment. but for the last 3 weeks these models have been completely blue-free zones!

The problem without the normal early high altitude snow showers/pak during late October & November which builds a base is that when the snow does arrive all at once it creates Acute Avalanche conditions.

There is a really good reason why the ski season in the majority of resorts across the Alps will start around 17 December. And a similar good reason why the first week of the season is usually dirt cheap.
If Christmas wasn't on 25th December I suspect the ski season would start around the beginning of January. Maybe, then, people wouldn't keep talking about March (when conditions are often at their best) as being "late season"

pam w, If you don't worry then your don't get the sudden rush of adrenaline that is released as soon as some of that worry is released.
Its not the worrying that is enjoyable but the removal of the worry. If you are just matter of fact and rational about everything then that never happens.
I suspect when that first big dump arrives and doesn't melt you still get that frisson of excitement, if so then despite the outward rationalism, deep down your still had a tingle of worry that it wouldn't come. If not then what a shame. |
+1! The whole will it / won't snow is part of the holiday anticipation. I'm cultivating a minor concern and I'm off to Cervinia for new year!

I understand "cold snow" (well, warm snow would just be... well, rain) and "on the 30th" but I'm rather lost apart from that. I'll assume it's good though

You'll note that the French winter holiday is not really at Christmas but over the February/March period, which is when they go on their ski holidays, sensible people that they are.
I think we've still got around 12-15C afternoon temperatures and that looks to continue towards the end of November so snow will have a hard job sticking around at resort level on non-shaded slopes. There is something of a temperature inversion so it is often warmer at altitude. I doubt the resorts will want to blow their snowmaking load so early. Val Tho is scheduled to open at the end of the month though but they will need to make snow to do so.

I'm not worried (booked for christmas). I don't know why so many think that winter or at least 'snow season' should start in November. and besides, November snow is useless, if you get a few foehn days at the start of December. Skiing is dependent of weather. There can be no snow, too much snow, it can be too hot, too cold, too windy, so what? As a child I used to go on "skiing holidays" to a hill with 10 slopes (eastern Europe). It still was a blast.
I wonder how much to blame are the ski movies and ski mags, they create expectations of powder-perfect trips, and we're left disappointed with our regular trips.
