When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Some interesting stats posted this week on the Val d'Isere website:

Link 1 suggests that total snowfall during the 2005 / 2006 season (624cm) was 12% above the 19-season average of 1988 to 2005 (559cm / 5.59m / 18.6ft). Last year was clearly a good one, overall.

However, if we look at the longer 5-year rolling average, from 2001 to 2005, then we see that total snowfall, at 498cm, was 11% below the 19-season average of 559cm.

This finding tallies with data on the Killington website, which indicates that total seasonal snowfall there has dropped on average by roughly 10 - 20% over the last 2 decades. Perhaps a pattern is emerging:

Link 2 indicates that 47% of last season in Val d'Isere was classified as a 'sunny day'. 26% of the season was a 'snowy day'. Each snowfall dumped on average 16cm during the 2005 / 2006 season.

Therefore, a typical week last year in Val d'Isere consisted of roughly 3 sunny days, 2 snowy days and, presumably, 2 cloudy days. Val d'Isere received about a foot of freshies per week.

Minor correction -- the 19-season average in Val d'Isere ran from 1987 to 2005, not 1988 to 2005.
