Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Trip Report - Hintertux

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Got back a week ago tonight from a quick trip to the Hintertux glacier. Usual mix of rock hard early mornings (and I'm talking about the skiing surface there!), softening up nicely at around 10 am for a couple of hours of perfect spring conditions. There was virtually nobody there. Never seen the place so deserted and my first trip there was in 1980. Anyway a picture speaks a thousand words so...

The ride up:

The run from the top station:

The run to the middle station (Tuxerfernerhaus):

These last two shots were taken at around 10 am on Bank Holiday Monday... crazy, where is everyone? Still, warp factor 10 for those of us lucky enough to be up there!

Large beer 3.30 Euros... what more do you need to know?

Frosty the Snowman, well, next May Bank Holiday you should be (or even in October which is not that far away). Happy to show you round the Michelin-tyred restaurants myself.

Bode Swiller,
Cheers for the report but it is not doing much to ease the withdrawal symptoms Crying or Very sad
I've been wanting to go here for a while.
What time can you ski till there and is there enough terrain open for a week of skiing or would you need to plan a few other activities?

RPF, Ski until 1 or 2pm no problem. This footage was taken at about 12:30 and it's softening up fast but still OK. Further down at the mid station it was geting v heavy but, hey, still very enjoyable.

Thing is, you can start early and finish early, leaving the pm for a swim, bike ride, hike, long lunch etc. And all at low low season prices.

I'll post up a pic of the terrain park soon. Personally, I go there for 3 or 4 days max. I know people who make a week out of it but there may not be enough open to keep you interested if mileage is your thing. I just like being in that valley and would happily walk around or bike instead.

Bode Swiller, I had the option of being there last week but turned it down as it had been too soft the equivalent week last year.

That Tyroler Groestl looks good, from memory the one in the Tuxerfernerhaus is better still.

Bode Swiller, thanks - good pix - it looks lovely. Bit too far for a weekend from here though, and we'll be open on 13th. I wouldn't mind a trip back though. Very Happy

I love Hintertux, I'd really like to go there in 'proper' summer. Also: that looks like the best lunch ever.

 You know it makes sense.

I've been. My first run of the weekend was from the top station. Having not skied for about a year and the doors opening to reveal a blizzard it was not much fun going down. I vowed never to go back.

Yours on the other hand looked like perfect conditions. It's made me reconsider rolling eyes .

NomadicBoo, It's only weather you could get that anywhere Shocked Get a good pair of goggles they will help your viability and pole plant as if your life depends on it (sometimes it will). Good lenses are bolle vermillion (not vermillion gun in bad light) or Oakley HI yellow if there is any thing to be seen you'll see it with these they are of absolutely no use in sunny conditions though. After a season in NZ and when ya get your new boots nothing will stop ya Madeye-Smiley

Yep, the weather can get a bit hairy up there just as it can in Tignes, Kaprun, Saas Fee etc etc. Luck of the draw in a high mountain environment. Good thing about any of these places is there are other lower altitude things to go and do if the skiing looks iffy... like having two lunches instead of the normal one or taking out a mountain bike etc.

RPF, If only! I have to admit, I wasn't fully prepared. I think on that exact day I was wearing aviator Ray-Ban's. Clearly not mountain grade material. I remember when I arrived at the bottom that the front part of my hair had frozen solid (not a good look) and my glasses had frozen to the bridge of my nose.

It's a very good lesson on style over substance. Mainly that be as stylish as you want and you'll get to the bottom one way or the other! Razz
