Never been but sure I spotted it in the Crystal brochure. Looks like a ski-in-ski-out apartment complex resort in France. The skiing is probably very good but France is not renowned for its nightlife...

copperfield12, Not been also but it does look quite tempting. Crystal also include lift pass in the price so making it very good value.

I'm off to Chamrousse over the New Year. The prices for accommodation lift passes etc is significantly less than the mega resorts. Any suggestions for a reliable private transfer from Grenoble airport?

Chamrousse has Green, very easy blues, reds that would be blues in most resorts and a couple of blacks.
The resort is split into 3 areas Chamrousse 1650,the slightly older part, Chamrousse 1700 which is the most modern area at the far side of the resort and is where you will find the Domain L'Arselle which is fearured in Thomson,Crystal ,Snowtrek and Erna Low, and lastly Chamrousse 1750 which is the centre Commercial in an area called Ross Beranger. Most restaurants ski hire shops etc are here.
We travelled by Eurostar and TGV from St Pancras via Lille to Grenoble for £99 return last year and this fare is available this year as well if you book early enough(TGV can only be booked within 90 days of your return date).
We booked the apartment at Domain L'Arselle through Erna Low (Apartment £425 less £150 for accom only) This is per apartment not per person.
Transfers from Grenoble to Chamrousse are easy by Isere bus (under 5 euro each way)
Ski hire is cheap, they do half day lift passes for those who like a sleep in in the morning and midweek the slopes are empty.
Not challenging but a great little resort for those on a budget.

Hello All,
If travelling by train to Grenoble then you could get a bus to Chamrousse that only costs a few euros per person each way. There are regular buses.
www.transisere.fr
You can get a bus from the airport to Grenoble to catch a bus that takes you to Chamrousse. Alot of connections, but much cheaper. Unfortunately, do not know the website/details for this but will find out.
I agree that the nightlife is not brilliant, but there are bars and restaurants, and I find after a hard full days skiing the last thing I need is a nightclub. There is also a swimming pool with hot tub and also a sauna to relax those tired muscles....and a gym for those with plenty of energy to burn.
I recommend it. Has some very testing black and red runs...and also caters well for the beginners and the very young.
Enjoy the skiing,
David

3 adults, 3 young kids flying out on 17th Jan - their flight doesn't get in till 9.30pm. Anyone recommend the most cost effective way to get to Chamrousse from Grenoble?
Most of the prices I have seen have been outrageous. (saw one for £1500!!)

Hi,
My partner and I are off skiing in chamrousse for a week on Jan 8th. Just wondering what people throught of the resort and a couple of questions about transfers.
Our flights were changed so now our transfers are messed up. We are struggling to find a way to get to the resort for less than 200 euros. Car hire and the bus from Grenoble to resort are out as the last bus has already left before we will get through. We are landing at 16:30.
Is anyone else going to Chamrousse from Grenoble on 8th of Jan 2011 around 4-7 ish and would want to share transfers? Does anyone have any advide on where to find good priced transfers (private, shared, taxi, other) or any other ideas on how we can get there?
Thanks

I have been, really liked it although the lifts were busy at half term. There must be a way to get the tarin nearer and then geta taxi. We got a taxi from geneva and that was about 70€. there will definately be a train to get you closer.

Libertine, taxi from Geneva for 70 euros? That sounds pretty cheap for a 100 mile taxi trip . . . or was that each?
There is a railway station in Grenoble, and regular buses go from there to Chamrousse (VFD/TransIsere), alternatively, a taxi from there should be substantially cheaper than from Geneva (c20 miles).
lukefowell89, if you can't hire a car, you might look at a bus to Grenoble, and a bus from there - you don't say which airport you are using, but the TransIsere website might help.

70 euros each way for a family of 4 from Geneva to Chamrousse is outrageously cheap, actually. It must be about a 2 hour drive! What company was that?

We went last year in march, we drove so can't help with the transfers. Had a great holiday, but we did find it a bit too quiet even with a 6th old in tow. Not a huge choice of bars and restaurants. Le club sandwich was a kind of pizza cum snack bar place which was pretty cheap, however the only English speaking member of staff was a rather ferocious French woman whom my daughter will never forget. Any bad behaviour and we threaten to take her back there for dinner

pam w, Not a problem I do make an effort with the language, just my French is extremely limited. The woman in question just appeared to have lost her temper (not with us especially) whenever we saw her. We will probably visit another small resort his year, have been looking at valmeinier. We looked at lofer, Austria but my daughter wants to stay in a self catered apartment again, the place we looked at in lofer was hotel half board. Need somewhere with lots of greens and blues s I'm just learning. Also need to avoid drag lifts for my husband who will be snowboarding.

L3VSA, you might have a look at Les Saisies - any number of self catering apartments, plenty of greens and blues and not too many drag lifts - and it's "big" compared to Bisanne 1500. Lessaisies.com
If you're beginners, and with a small child, you wouldn't need the wider area - Les Saisies itself would have enough, and has the easier runs. Excellent snow record (not bad even now, when there's been little new snow for ages, throughout much of the French alps).

Hello everyone - It's Ben's Bus. Probably a bit late for the person who originally posted this question - Ben's Bus has just started a new route running shared ski transfers from Grenoble Airport to Chamrousse www.bensbus.co.uk The prices for a return (Saturday to Saturday) is £43pp. We also run on Sundays and certain weekdays and we charge a surcharge for these. It's a direct service so hopefully this will make this journey a lot easier for anyone looking in the future

Chamrousse is becoming a suburb of Grenoble. Believe it or not there are people who live there and commute to Grenoble to work. After all, at 15 km it is closer to the centre of Grenoble than many of the other dormitory areas and much closer to the centre than many of us live from our places of work
When I skied there a few years ago we stayed in the valley at a Crolle and commuted to Chamrousse and Les Sept Laux. We used a hire car but there is a bus service.
The busses leave form the railway station in Grenoble, as do those running to and from the airport. A quick search on the internet reveals that the last bus leaves at 18:15, but a later one leaves one and a half hours later from the University station. The bus takes about 30 minutes so a taxi should not be that expensive. The winter service may be different.
Have a look at the TransIsere web site for public transport information and remeber that France operates integrated public transport so look at trains, trams and busses to plan your route.
http://www.transisere.fr/ftp/FR_Lignes/6010-6050-6051.pdf
Being a huge science centre and university town Grenoble is much more cosmopolitan than most French cities and has fantastic opportunities for nightlife and other activities (magnificent old fort, indoor climbing wall, multinational restaurants, cinemas etc) but you may need a guide (and a taxi) to find them. Espace Montain near the university is the largest ski and climbing shop I have every seen by a long way. With a youngish and highly educated popluation almost every where you go in Grenoble and surrounding areas someone speaks english. Much more so than in the mega resorts of the Tarrentaise.
The real downside with Chamrousse, however, is that the skiing is not that great. It is much better at Les Sept Laux

Whao, a bit of a reality check, it is over 30km by road (unless you are a crow) and a nasty drive at times in winter, esp the road from Uriage which suffers a lot of black ice, so although some people do live up there and commute to grenoble (notably children going to high school) they are relatively few and far between.
It is over half an hour by car, you could drive to Chambery in the same time. You also burn up the fuel driving in the mountains.

Of course Davidof is right in that that road distance are longer than distances measured on a map. I live 20km from work, but even with the highly deleveloped road network in the UK it is 35km on the road. I tell people that I live 20km from work.

johnE, I skied Chamrousse several years back, the on piste skiing is more than enough for most British skiers and the off-piste is amazing. We spent the whole week off-piste with a guide and never skied the same area twice and had some really amazing days. That was an early March as I remember (Easter holiday).
We did have problems with some people trying to steal stuff off the balcony though, perhaps its proximity to Grenoble is also a handicap in that sense. We were on the 5th floor of an apartment block and the people were climbing up the balconies and chucking stuff down to their mates. I am a very light sleeper and the guy who tried to get on to our balcony was rather surprised when I appeared in the doorway with my snow shovel one my hand and my flash gun in the other trying desperately to look aggressive. He disappeared toute suite. We reported it the next day to the Gendarmerie but as we had nothing taken I have no idea what ensued.
