Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Something very different (and a bit scary): skiing in the Caucasus Mountains.

This article just posted by the US magazine 'Ski' provides a rare and very insightful picture of skiing in one of the most troubled but fascinating ski areas in the world - the
Caucasus
(where Austrians were once involved in developing ski lifts and accommodation) and the resort of Krasnaya Polyana.
The writer, Steve Friedman, endures a 3-hour Aeroflot flight from Moscow and says:
Quote:
"I do all of that, because if Putin ever succeeds in pumping a reported $1 billion into the area, building new hotels, carving new runs, installing high-speed chairlifts and gondolas and otherwise making the area less like Dogpatch with snow and more like Zermatt, I want to be able to say that I skied here when. That I roamed the mountain when pigs roamed the streets."

What a great article.
Dare I say it sort of reminded me of Bulgaria???
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Excellent read. I hope for his sake that he used a nom de plume. No one will go anywhere near the place after that!

It's actually really sad to see yet another pocket of the globe torn apart by civil war. The guy who fixes my washing machine (of all people) comes from that part of the world and gave me some advice about flying from Germany to Tblisi to ski the
Caucasus
, but that was during a period of relative stability.
This isn't a million miles from where the hundreds of kids and parents were killed in the school of Beslan.
