Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Racing - Protective Shorts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
To all the racers out there, I would like to hear your thoughts on the following:

I'm planning on buying leg/arm guards for Slalom racing, and potentially a stealth top (which would also be useful for whatever I am doing on snow).

But do any of you use protective shorts? Are they all compatible with race suits? Lastly, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

c0Ka|Ne, My race suit has some padding on the hip as well as on the arms, I don't have a stealth top and have never felt that I needed protective shorts. I don't think I would want to restrict my movement by wearing any more layers than I do at present.

I have arm guards but only use them for GS.

If you are considering getting a race suit then I would also think about whether you are going to buy a back protector, they take up quite a bit of space and may mean going up a size in race suit.

A race suit is on the cards, but I will likely get it next season now. I do have a Slytech back protector which I will pair with it though.

Restriction is one of the things I was a bit concerned about, as too many layers won't help with movement. I would expect a padded GS suit negates the need for a stealth top as well.

Good point, never considered that. I'm hoping I never have to race on plastic =)

c0Ka|Ne, I wear padded shorts for freeride and freestyle but they are way to restrictive for racing in. The padding in the suit provides enough protection outside of the shin pads for slalom and if you want them GS arm guards.

Most plastic racers don't wear them, but perhaps 1/4 do. BMX gear is cheaper and adequate for plastic IMV.

Thanks for the insight all, think I'll bail on the padded shorts (from a racing perspective anyway). Jury is still out on the stealth top. I'll try it on, and see how it feels.

Save your money...I wouldn't bother with the shorts either... or a stealth top... I've got one and have only used it a couple times.

Far better off buying a padded GS suit and some warm over shorts. I presume you have shin protectors, decent protective gloves, Pole hand guards and good helmet with chin guard?

It can get expensive this racing mullarky. rolling eyes Razz

Don't I know it! I'll be getting the Shin/Arm guards, pole guards, and SL helmet this weekend. Gloves I have, and padded GS suit will be later in the year, I think.

Pedantica @ sarcasm Very Happy Maybe Landgraaf next month for the BASS races. Planning to do some training out there, but might take the (very deep!) plunge and do the races as well. Just for the experience, and feel of it all. If I don't get any DNFs, I'll be happy !

rjs, why's that? I do some GS sometimes (or a close approximation of it wink) so thought it would be a good idea. Think it's too early to worry about?

Take part at Landgraaf, you won't regret it - there is no shame. But you definitely won't need arm guards.
