Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A barre is a long chain of cliffs in French. Above the small ski resort of le Granier in the French Chartreuse (closed since mid march) there is an imposing cliff band with some vertiginous couloirs that lead down. A summer path passes this way. The kind of trail you avoid when damp and where you have to do some small scrambling to climb or descend. It also gets skied on a regular basis. Normally activity is intense after snowfall when fresh powder attracts skiers but the open west face is avalanche prone.

I decided to take a look under more stable spring conditions. It doesn't look too hard from the car park

after a climb up the pistes (450m of vertical for this tiny resort) and the woods above you get onto the west face below the couloir complex

it looks pretty flat, but not from the top

(photo taken earlier in the day)

The descent is between 50 and 35 degrees

even the small tree in the center is leaning in to the slope Smile

good snow conditions in the couloirs and on the face

and a chance to do some graffiti on the slopes

It is hooning it down today so a chance to catch up on some stuff around the house. 20cm on the roads at l'alpe d'Huez and Chamrousse this morning. Going to be an epic transfer for some.
