Many touring boots have multiple or adjustable forward lean settings - why?
Which settings have you got and which do you use?
I've got Dynafit titans and have been playing around with both settings (15 & 21). Have used 21 deg mostly in the past but started using 15 deg more recently.

They have the heels significantly higher than the toes, which moves you forward without having to resort to the higher forward lean setting on your boots.
Some people describe lower cuff angles as more 'modern'. I've always assumed that that is a reference to skis with more side cut needing less aggressive forward pressure to ski them, as you don't have to flex forward and pressure the tips in the way that you have to do with straighter skis. But I'm not 100% sure about that bit.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yes I've heard modern boots are more upright. But why the two settings e.g. could the further forward lean to be to offset a heavy rucksack?

To accommodate more people. Different anatomical doodads and sheer emotional attachment mean people prefer different amount of forward lean.
Obviously the more 'core' you are the more you need more forward lean 'cause racing boots.

my race boots are 16 degrees i think 21 seems a touch much on the titans..

I'm surprised to hear people talking about the amount of forward lean on a touring boot. I can understand if you're racing. I've recently changed to TLT 5 Mountain TF-X (weigh just 1225g) and for me fit superbly. In descent on slopes of c. 40 deg. I feel really good in them and have all the stiffness I need. A local guide even takes the front stiffening tongue out of them as he feels no need for it. http://www.dynafit.com/fr/product/chaussures/tlt-5-mountain-tf-x
A great boot if you're looking for lightness and performance.

Why?
Getting the right set-up in terms of cuff angle and binding delta can make a huge difference to balance & energy consumption.
Personally I am not a fan of lots of cuff angle - alot of alpine boots seem waaaay ott to me. But I do like the 21º on the Titan & the TLT5s feel a bit upright to me - bearable, but it can make a noticeable difference on long/steep/heavy snow descents.

I just feel that people (and seemingly a lot of occasional skier Brits) get hung up on technical specification when what really matters is whether the boot is suited to your usage and skiing ability; (the Titan's are too heavy for what I want). The TLT5s are more of a ski-rando / touring boot rather than aimed more at the Freeride / walk a little bit off piste like the Titan's . At the end of the day if you feel comfortable in the boot in the situations you want to use them then it comes down to personal choice. Some brands fit certain feet.
If I was going for a racing boot then that would be an entirely different matter; then I would take the advice of my son's boss an ex-trainer for one of France's national teams and moniteur de ski.

marksavoie, I certainly don't disagree about people getting hung up on tech specs.
However...
Why should I want any difference in angles between my Titans & TLT5s just becaouse one is a 'freeride' boot and the other a 'rando' boot... Last thing I skied with the TLT5s, skiability & performance were quite important to me: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=98615

DB, I use BD Quadrants for occasional touring and, more often, teaching on the mat. I far prefer the more upright fwd lean setting. 14 & 21deg may be the spec I think.
