Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Long weekend in April - where?

 Poster: A snowHead

We (two adults, decent skiers but not off-piste experts) can go skiing 11-15th April.

We were thinking of going to Les Carroz or Samoens, because we've never been there and they are easy to get to. What's the snow likely to be like by mid-April this year? Is it too risky? (We'd also be happy in Flaine, we think, but can't find any short break accommodation there).

Anywhere else we should think of going?

we don't want to go anything with a long and difficult drive (e.g. Val d'Isere) although if there were a tour operator offering transfers we'd be OK with that. But prefer a short journey given we'll be doing it mainly at night - we need to be at work for at least the morning of the 11th April.

good question. There is a lot of snow about but the warm weather at the moment is disappearing it rather rapidly. I was sat outside a restaurant at 1600m yesterday, in a light T-shirt, far too hot in the baking sun and the snow was getting very sticky in the afternoon on southerly slopes. It depends a bit what you're after, really. If you want the best quality snow around you'd be better off driving to Tignes (it's not a difficult drive).

If you're happy to ski for the few hours during the day when the snow is still passable, enjoy a bit of slush and look forward to relaxing on a terrace, Samoens or Les Carroz should be fine, though in both cases you'd probably have a bit of a trek to the best snow, which will probably be up in the Flaine bowl. Lower slopes might well be closed.

Will you be flying? You could probably get a transfer to tignes - there is plenty of info on transfers available here, probably one of the specialist transfer companies rather than a tour operator.
