Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snowboard beginners course decimates Austrian school trip

18 out of 76 (about 1 in 4) pupils on a recent Austrian snowsports trip had medical/hospital treatment.

Quote:
Pupils suffered from nine fractures, eight bruises and strains as well as cuts. According to head mistress Claudia Reinsperger, most of the injured pupils were in the snowboarding beginners group. The group consisted of 37 pupils.

Ms Reinsperger [headteacher] could not provide scientific reasons for this statement. She is now considering cancelling the snowboarding beginners courses next year.

Maybe extreme ironingboarding would be safer.

The reason I use wristguards is that in over 10 seasons spent working with schools I never saw ine group of boarders go home with all arms intact.

Decimate

verb
[with object]

1kill, destroy, or remove a large proportion of:the inhabitants of the country had been decimated
drastically reduce the strength or effectiveness of (something):public transport has been decimated

2 historical kill one in every ten of (a group of people, originally a mutinous Roman legion) as a punishment for the whole group: the man who is to determine whether it be necessary to decimate a large body of mutineers

Obviously I'm adopting the public transport-type application here, in the sense that the strength or effectiveness of this group of children had been drastically reduced.

The reason I use wristguards...
In New Zealand they have reduced the overall injury rate by 30% over 6 years by, among other things, heavily promoting the use of wristguards. Wrist injuries being the biggie. Other measures include better signage, better snow management and snow making, equipment checks. Compulsory helmets didn't feature funnily enough Toofy Grin

A couple of things to note here...
The www.austriantime.at is quite poo-poo....
Secondly Austrian school trips often don't bother hiring ski schools / boarding schools and rely on 'colleagues' to teach the pupils snowsports.
This results in loads of poorly organised over sized groups p[laying human slalom with terrible leaders.... It is a bloody nightmare when teaching during these weeks!

The principal states (according to the link above):

"The head mistress does not tolerate criticism of the eight supervisors: "The supervisors were very good; they are well-trained colleagues and it was not their first ski course either", Ms Reinsperger said."

My advise to Ms Reinsperger is to get a good deal with the local ski school.

Perhaps the local ski school should stage a flashmob in Ms Reinsperger's schoolyard
