oliverracing, absolutely definitely your skis and boots are in addition to your hold luggage allowance. It's been discused on here at length and sometimes people think it's hard to find the answer on teh swiss website, but it is there in more than one place. I don;t have time to provide the link for you but trust me!

I flew Swiss air lhr to gva last week, 2 of us, took 2 skis in 1 bag and 1 skis and 2 sets of poles in other bag. Both of us also had big hold bag, they said we could have put a boot bag in hold as well. Lovely plane, well looked after

thanks for the info - I'm not sure i'll risk it though, as i would prefer to pack slightly lighter, than the chance of a 50 euro fee

Lufthansa charges €100 per direction to carry skis to North America and back. Within Europe they're great. Transatlantic not so much.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Lufthansa and Swiss still has same policy on our flights from South Africa to Europe. Skis and boots fly for free!

you need to have skis/boots/poles in a separate bag to benefit from the 'additional weight'
I single bagged it in December and got stung for an 'excess baggages' even though the ONLY reason I was over weight was the skis, boots, poles which put the weight closer to 28kg.
