Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Arcs questions

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We have friends staying in Arc 2000 at Easter & we've decided we would also like to ski at Easter somewhere in Les Arcs so we can ski with them on some of the days & share a bit of après with them (bit of a last minute decision I know).
How easy is it to access Arc 2000 from other bits of Les Arcs if we find somewhere to stay in another bit rather than 2000 itself? We usually stay in catered accommodation which seems to be more based in sections other than 2000.
We'll probably drive - is parking accessible if we end up in one of the car free bits?
Puzzled

If you stay in 1950 which is mostly upmarket self catering you'll be fine. In 1600 or 1800 you'll struggle to link up after the lifts close and I believe the last inter-resort bus is around 8pm.

Plenty of parking but plenty of €. It's also quite a long way around, remember Top Gear, Hammond in an Audi RS Estate versus the 'French Ski Bums' (OK, that was to Villaroger, but you get the point).

???? There are weeks to go before Easter. Last minute decisions are the day before. If that. The resort is not fully booked for either of the 2 Easter weeks and I doubt if it will be

It will be easy to meet up for a ski but getting back from 2000 to the other parts of Les Arcs such as 1600 and 1800 after about 20:00 will be difficult. It may be possible to hitch a lift but it is rather too far to walk apre apre ski. The last time I stayed in 2000 was a catered chalet so catered accommodation is available in 2000. But then I have found that it is often just as cheep to stay self catering and eat out, especially if you can negotiate a deal with a local restaurant.

Car parking is accessible in all the Les Arcs villages, but you have to pay in 2000 and 1800 during the winter. Details are on the Les Arcs web site.

Of course we remember it. In one shot he is shown descending the mountain and then later coming back up through Arc 1600. He clearly forgot something and had to go back for it - a map perhaps?

blizt, Plenty of catered in 2000 with TO's? As others have said, Meeting during the day would be no issue but in the evening more so. Reality is if you are anywhere other than 2000 or 1950 you will spend a huge amount of your holiday moving about trying to meet your friends.

I liked the trip through France in the current series of Top Gear. Hammond and May alledgedly rolling through Northern France on the Eurostar on their way to Paris with a clear view of the Alps from the Window. Same view then appears 10 mins later having "crossed" Paris and got on the TGV.

By convenient I meant that we have friends staying in Arc 2000 & would like to spend some time skiing with them & also probably meet up sometimes for a bit of après (not late night but a few drinks at the end of the day as they have children).

No read what I said previously. Unless you stay in 2000 or 1950 meeting up in the evening will be a pain. Also whatever financial gain you may make by staying down the mountain will be lost in parking and fannying about costs of trying to meet.

You can ask the same question in many ways, but the answer remains the same. Stay in 2000 or 1950 if you want to meet up with your friends. snowHead

Thanks for your replies thefatcontroller. I was asking on here as websites of chalets, hotels etc all say what wonderful access they have to the whole of Paradiski but it's very hard to gauge how big a pinch of salt to take with their info when like me you don't know the geography of the resort having only stayed in Arcs 1800 once many years ago so don't really "get" how everything is/isn't linked

blizt, They are right, all places in Les Arcs have great access but your question is slightly different. Do you want to meet your friends once or twice during your holiday or do you want to be within easy reach and fairly instant and easy access?

blizt, easy to get to Arc 2000 from Vallandry on skis (providing you are happy on at least blue pistes). To visit 2000 in the evening would need a drive of at least an hour each way. As thefatcontroller said, if you want to meet your friends after the ski lifts have shut you should probably stay in 1950 or 2000 unless you are prepared to drive.

They have youngish children who will be in ski school so they will be restricted when & where they can ski due to ski school dropping off & picking up times. We can get around pretty quickly & will have no such restrictions on time. We aren't planning to ski with them all week but thought it would be nice to meet up 3 or 4 times during the week for a ski. It would be nice to share a few bevvies either straight off the slopes or during the evening on some occasions but they will be restricted in what they can do because of looking after the children.

blizt, Back to the same answer 1950 or 2000...however one other potential option, Arc 1600, free bus from 2000 to 1600 that runs into early evening. You could have a bevvy with them after skiing in 2000 and then bus back.

However Laughing Laughing 2000 or 1950 still your best option

On skis in the day, easy from anywhere - you can cross the resort in one lift one run from 2000 (bois d'ours up, long diagonal blue down). But for evening drinks 2000 itself, 1950 or at a push 1600 (bus hub) are the only convenient ones for 2000 meet-ups. 1800 is possible but tedious (over an hour by free bus, with a change in 1600) and peisey/vallandry not possible at all as far as i know.

Or walk. Afterall it is a popular evening strolling route down the road and back.

Once upon a time a long time ago we were staying in Arc 2000 and had a friend in 1600. we would always ski together and would often have a drink in the evening in a bar in either 1800, 1600 or 2000 before getting the bus back in time for dinner. Strangely it wasn't the slightest hassle.

johnE, we were talking about peisey/vallandry which aren't on the same road, although now I'm thinking about it you could bus to 1800 and then walk down. I'm pretty sure there is a way back to vallandry on foot from 1800 - one or two of our group have used it in the past.

Arc 1800 and Vallandry are on the same road. It just that the road is covered in snow during the winter, but late in the season you can see the tarmac poking through. When the previous mayor of Bourg st Maurice put a toll booth on the road there was an outcry. You are not supposed to charge tolls on public roads in France so I am not sure how they got away with it.

a.j., The service road is a lovely walk. It is just below 'foret' & takes about 35-40 mins to Vallandry from 1800. johnE, I love the idea of it being a toll road - only in France, eh? Laughing

genepi, The massive toll booths you see on the approach to Arc 1800 are open during the summer which makes it a really useful route from Les Arcs to the Rosuel gate to the Vanoise National park or the tourist attractions above Peissey-Nancroix. Mind you the start of the road is tricky to find
