Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm going for a boot fitting at Pro Feet in a week or so. What sort of socks should I wear? Or should I get new socks?

TwistBarbie, Take the ski socks you normally use, and ask them. I really like the (very) thin Smartwool ones - but Profeet will be able to advise.

Wear whatever socks you normally wear when skiing. Last season Profeet were selling ski socks in their shop, which I think were X-Socks.

X-socks are great, although purely synthetic and they come up short in the leg. Be careful if your long/large in the lower leg. Smartwool make a natural version. I wear both and care not which one, however i might plump for the smartwool if it were slightly cooler.

Let the guys at Pro-Ski advise which one, as socks are the last important part of the fitting process to regulate volume. Twisted Evil

Tried some Salomon Ski Race ones the other day and seem a cheaper alternative

TwistBarbie, when I got my last pair of boots fitted last spring, they made me try on the boots without socks to ensure they got a good fit. I now wear silk liners rather than socks...

I'd recommend taking your sock collection along though - it's better that you have them if you need them... Smile

I've been to Profeet today. They made me wear their own socks and fitted me into my new boots. They said you should wear them. I don't know if this is right but I'm following their advice. As far as the boot fitting goes it was very informative and they only gave me two options after looking at my feet. I would have liked to try more but they said there was no point and again I felt inclined to go along with them. The most important thing seemed to be the footbeds which I've now got a very modified pair of.

Hopefully all will be well now but I'll have to go to X-scape a couple of times to test them and maybe go back again. The one thing I would say is that they do seem to know what they are talking about. Will be interesting to see what others think after they have gone as well.

Jack Hallam,

Not entirely sure about this, I wouldn't be buying if I wasn't completely happy.

If I really liked a boot I would have insisted I try it just to check out the prognosis, I think.

A friend of mine paid £240...!!! he says, on boot mods and thats more than the boot was worth but he has never been happier with a fit. He has awful feet due to too many judo injuries so he thinks this is justified

JT, I'm happy at this stage but I'm just a doubting Thomas and can't wait too get on a slope to see the results. Just got to wait for my back to recover from ahaving a disc removed then I'm off (or finished!!!).

Jack Hallam,

Disc removed....!!! Couldn't they just fuse it...?

I have a prolapsed disc which impinges on a nerve but it doesn't stop me doing too much.
I've cut out running very far and don't do jumps anymore but I don't like the sound of a removed disc...!!

I don't know what the shop charge but I would be doubtingl until I knew it worked, as well

JT, I totally lost the use of my right leg! I guess they thought I needed something drastic doing. To be exact I prolapsed a disc and they have removed the central spongey bit and managed to put the outer bit back. I showed them a video of me skiing as well. Their advice was to have both legs removed as the problems I have in the skiing department are incurable!

Jack Hallam,

Sounds awful, did it work?
Did the prolapsed disc degenerate..?
Do I have this to look forward to as I still have pins and needles in my foot which seems to move around a bit..??

The specialist says this is a dead nerve which might re-route itself..!!!

Jack Hallam - When I went for my boots I had done plenty of research on the net as I have narrow feet and had 'narrowed hehehe' it down to maybe two models. After measuring my feet the store produced the two very styles that I had in mind, and one pair (the one I had thought would fit the best) did indeed fit fantastically.

Went to Profeet today as sleazy jet lost my boots earlier the year. Profeet are indeed very good, professional and very friendly. Started with the usual questions of skiing ability, what type of skiing and so on.
Went onto a foot scanner which confirmed that I have “normal” feet with no real problems.
After I was measured up for size I tried the shells of a few boots on while Jimmy checked everything and asked me to move my feet to the front and from side to side. After much consideration we narrowed it down to Head or Nordica. Head on right foot and Nordica on left foot. Swapped them over after 10 min. I couldn’t tell the difference so Jimmy suggested that I go for the Nordicas for various reasons.
We then spent ages doing a specialised footbed up. After the footbed was reconstructed it was back on the foot scanner for some more scanning and more adjustments to the footbeds.
Canting and alignment was also checked and adjusted and finally it was onto the skiers-edge machine for final fine-tuning.
The staff are very knowledgeable and very informative. Going to try them over the weekend at MK but so far I can only highly recommend Profeet. Thanks Jimmy at Profeet.

Yep, it did degenerate!

I had pins and needles and massive cramps in my calf muscles, and I don't mean when I was skiing.

The pins and needles did move around and varied in intensity from day to day. My disc was as a result of years of rugby. The specialist I went to does a lot of work for Sale RUFC and Wigan RLFC. He said that my prolapse was pressing against the central nerve and needed operating on straight away. He said I could leave it but it would just die down and not go away and that I would need it doing eventually as it would never go right and I may end upp using control of certain bodily functions! I thought it was only 15 Stellas that caused that but obviously not.

My advice is see how it goes but if the problem keeps occuring then cut it out!

Jack Hallam,

Scary..my guy didn't say anything like and I've seen the MRI. I've been stable for a couple of years now and the only tangible problem I think I have is the pins and needles in the ball of the foot which moves around abit from time to time but does not impede anything I do....I think.

If it gets worse I will go back to the Dr

Lorraine, From my days in a shop here we don't advise silk socks. They do tend to make you perspire which is a killer if you suffer from cold feet. Try ODLO under socks and a decent pair of Therlos for those that suffer with cold feet.

I had my Profeet fitting today. I already had new boots, so I was quite relieved when I was re-measured and they were the correct size. I was checked with the foot scanner, and I was surprised that there was pretty well no weight through one heel, when standing in a neutral stance.
My footbeds were made up with me sitting down, 1st time I have experienced this method, and wedges were placed under the footbed to sort my alignment when I flex. My weight distribution was rechecked and my heatfit inners were ...er heated to fit. I also had a minor adjustment made on a boot tight spot on one foot. Comfort and fit were checked out on the Skiers Edge, and I was advised to ski the boot to check for final tune up req. My fitter DID laugh at my Thor-Lo's as predicted Very Happy , and she recommended Falke Thermolite SK2, a midweight sock. My thanks to Leith at Profeet for fitting my boots, next stop MK.

They fitted mine last week and they felt OK. Not been to a slope yet. Tried them on again today and noticed that the ridge in the insole which is supposed to be under the cavity between the ball of your foot and your toes feels too far back i.e behind the ridge. Is this normal? Will my feet slip back into position when I ski?

When I read this, I thought.....
Are you using the same ski sock, that you were fitted with?
It may also be worth leaving the bottom two clips lightly fastened, clipping up the top two and levering your shin forward on the boot cuff. This will push the heel back into the heelcup.
Additionally our feet can be different sizes, depending on what we have been doing. If you are trying on your boots at home, when you walk around, try to relax your shin on the cuff, which is close to the skiing position. If all that fails, call Profeet, I'm no bootfitter Very Happy

Silk doesnt breathe does it? So not only might a silky sock make your feet sweat more, it also will trap the moisture in. I have to say that i find the warmest part of my footwear is actually the boot, having socks on makes precious little difference to the heat of my toes, so I use the thinnest socks I can find now.

Just a ponderance..... ALOT of part time skiers (presumably not snowheads!) see to advise using big heavy socks and some go as far as suggesting there should be no heels. Where has this come from? Everyone who should know anything has told me it is total nonsense!
