Hi, needing some advice re the black run back to Grimentz..how hard is this run? Bearing in mind I'll do blacks but not happily!
Thanks, Julie [/i]

If the run is open, the top section is pisted. It begins with a trail onto the run, this can feel exposed on the right, take your time, it's not steep. When you reach the main piste, it's wide open and very beautiful, a steep Red, to regular Black gradient. The "run out" back to Grimentz is another trail, through the woods, well marked, again not steep, but loong! Ski the Chamois mid to late morning, then have a long lunch and a large Beer in Grimentz. Avoid setting off on the Chamois after 1pm on warm days.

Hi, I agree with snowbunny this is the most fantastic run, it's got everything. Especially an atmosphere of adventure and skiing into the unknown at the top. The first section of piste is only steep just as you enter it and then it becomes gradually less steep. When I was last there, in mid January, that entry section was quite narrow I am not sure why because in previous years it has been much wider. The light can get flat in the late afternoon even on clear days. I will be there again next week and it is a must do run if you are in the valley. Although personally I think the piste de Lona in Grimentz just nudges it!
This year by bus, next year spanking new gondola linking the two villages
hopefully that won't kill the fantastic off piste in the area.....
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

Who knows! The stated aim of the new gondola is to increase visitor numbers so it may mean there is some impact, but to be honest it never seems to be too busy at the moment. I don't think the new lift will generate more pistes being created because of the nature reserve and conservation rules that apply.
After all it is free

It will be a Cable Car, not a Gondola. Start point is beside the Grimentz-Bendolla Gondola station. End point is just above the Marmottes Cafe in the middle of the main Zinal Bowl.

No worries. I would have preferred a Gondola, however, it's not my 30m chf. Due to open in Nov 13.
Hi Snowbunny, I think you may well be right a gondola may well have been a better choice. I am looking forward to it opening but I am not sure quite how much difference it will make from the current bus arrangements. We shall see I suppose.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thanks for replies, it's our first visit to the valley. 3 weeks and counting!
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Just back from Grimentz. Chamois is skiing well and there is a lot of powder just to the sides at the top section. 2 things
1 be aware that there is a fairly long walk out at the end of the run. It is flat but the kids in our group found it tiring
2 do check the bus times (on piste maps) as the timings can mean a longish wait to take the return bus. Not a problem as, obviously, you can ski the Grimentz side. If you are staying in Grimentz I recommend against taking the first bus to Zinal as we did this on one of the days and then had a very long (1 hour) queue at the bottom of Zinal
You know it makes sense.

Hi, if you're heading for Zinal/Grimentz any time soon you probably know this already but the new cable car link opening has been delayed until 18th Jan 2014 . Even in Switzerland these things happen. Julie, we were like you first time visitors last year, we loved it and are going back in ten days - how did you get on?
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Gareth, check out www.backcountryadventures.co.uk if you would like to do some guided offpiste while there. Run by a friend of mine

The new lift (Grimentz - Zinal link) is now delayed until the 'end' of January 2014. Not very 'Swiss' timekeeping so no doubt a big telling off on its way for all concerned...

I skied this today in great conditions, and enjoyed every single turn. Highly recommended!
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@IanTr, skied this a week or so ago and yes it was great. There are fewer bends at the top to get onto the piste proper this year, the top 50 meters or so is nice and steep.
