Colleague is off to Obertaurn in a couple of weeks, we were just looking at the webcams and had to do a double take when we saw a cabin go past on a lift, and the next was a chair.
Turns out it's a kombi lift, 8 seat chair, followed by 10 cabin. It's the Gruenwaldkopf http://www.gamsleiten2.at/gruenwaldkopf.htm and was built last year at some point.
So how does this work? When do you know if you need to have your skis off to get in the kabin or your skis on to get on a chair? Are these very common (never seen them before)?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

There’s a couple in Verbier - you queue one side for the chair, and another side for the cabin, whichever takes your fancy. Good for families who want to see more of the area as you can then get linked gondolas quite a distance to proper mountain restaurants etc, and skiers can get easy access to the slopes alongside without taking off skis.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

hammerite, There is one in Schladming. There are different loading points for chairs or cabin. So you choose what you want to go up in and prepare accordingly.

There is a video clip knocking around on youtube, linked to on a thread here (possibly last seasons Arlberg snow report) of the combi lift they opened last season in Lech (Wiebermahd) which helps demonstrate how it works. Like others say, two different queues and two different exit points for each.

hammerite, Was there a couple of weeks ago
It works well and gets rid of a bit of a bottleneck
One of the lifts that it connects to has also been upgraded
As others have said two queues and exit points

Not seen the aforementioned ones, but I guess there's potential to be like the clever double lift in Tignes. 2 separate 4man loading at the bottom, but chairs interleave and go up a single cable. Clever mid-station too i think, so alternate chairs can go to offload, or carry on up the next bit, or all stay on the lower section, etc.

Same as Plein Sud in VT, but it is a sixer. Works well.

The one in Montgenevre is referred to as a 'telemixte'.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

A few of them around, also known as Telemix or Chondolas. Great idea, I like them.

We used the one in Montgenevre a couple of years ago - chair most of the time and then it turned bitterly cold and we were rather glad to get inside the gondola. They seem a brilliant idea and great for getting small people up quickly and safely. First used one in Verbier I think and we were with people who ski there a lot so they were able to herd us in the right direction.

And in Mayrhofen. Saved my friend's bacon when his wife realised ski-ing was not for her.
