I'm thinking of buying a lib tech board. I like to do a bit of everything but prefer powder to anything else.
Has anybody got a bad word to say about lib tech? Does the magna traction make much difference? And the c2btx is that a massive game changer?

All the tech blurb is just ways of explaining the same thing i.e. magna traction is just wavy edges - burton have a similar thing called Frostbite I think. c2btx is just the rocker/profile camber which is a blend a lot like other manufacturers.
Don't get me wrong, they are amazing boards but they aren't 'game changers' or light years ahead of anyone else in technology.
If you're over 30, have all the gear and buy a skate banana you will get laughed at

This. Same goes for the other various flavours of Banana and Pickle out there.
When Whitelines did their kitporn bible at the start of the season, they did a brief synopsis of all the variant cambers and profiles you can get, IIRC I counted up 8 or 9 properly different cambers you could go out and buy, and most of which were being touted as 'Game Changers'

Charliefoxtrot, I bought one of the first banana mag lib techs - a TRS from 2008 I think (when lib were first to introduce rocker and mag tech before everyone copied it the year or two afterwards) - yep good board, well made, fun to ride and mag does seem to help a bit on hard pack or ice - did it make me ride like Travis Rice - errmmm nope! I still have it (if you wanna buy it!) and ride it in powder where I think the rocker float is noticeable - in the end though its just a snowboard and it'll only be as good as you are! Bought a shorter K2 slayblade for all round hooning last year which I enjoyed a lot last year - but its still just a snowboard!
short story - its all mostly marketing blurb to some extent or other - paying £600 for a snowboard won't make you a better snowboarder! paying £ on some really good lessons is more likely to be a 'game changer'!
But still nice board - buy it, ride it, sure you'll love it!

Charliefoxtrot, If you can ride a board properly then it's all techie bollox that you don't need . . . if you're a bit tentative and technique unsure then they can be a little crutch to forgive the missing skills. The only thing that's a 'game changer' on a board is learning to use the one you've got

Well I heard they float well in powder and the magna traction helps on ice. That sounds good enough for me.
And a shop near me has last seasons TRS going cheap. Thanks for your help guys
I think I can ride like travis rice so sod it!

Remember there being some reverse-camber stuff back when I did a season in NZ back in 2001.
They definitely did a lot to popularise the current rocker phase, I'll give you that much.
Masque, I'm as big a fan of old-school camber as you like, but a wee bit of rocker in a powder board does feel lovely... about to get one of these in as a demo board: http://www.amplid.com/en/Snowboards/Creamer.html
Looking forward to having a wee go on it myself.

lib-banana, Don't get me wrong, I've ridden a reverse cambered and rocker'd boards and in specific circumstances they are bloody fantastic but they don't ride the whole hill with the same panache. And when you really try to carve a <camber board they've no real bite or tail pop you end up just riding the sidecut . . . nice, but as exciting and skills demanding as getting yer prostate checked . . . you lot will understand when you're older.
We're getting down to the skier level of wanting a different tool for differing conditions . . . boarding DNA is being diluted . . . sad
Now for a challenge . . . I've some Bishop Bomber tele binding going on to a not too elderly Burton Custom in an Alpine foot stance . . . who wants to give it a try? Superb fore/aft mass transition and easy hip angulation for edge bite. Should make powder gliding better than sex and half as painful
|
|
|
|
|

I have just had a horrendous vision of tele bindings on a board in a duck stance. Terrifying!

stevomcd, even I'm not THAT stupid . . . come close a few times but I do have and ride a teleboard.

Masque, I'd agree with all of that which is why I only rude my lib in certain conditions now - glad to say I'm not quite old enough to need the prostate check quite yet though - not quite! I'll leave you to the tele bindings though - and take your word for it! Just noticed the OP has already decided to buy his lib so guess he made his own mind up anyhow!

Masque, I gather you are the cantankerous old git of this forum who loves to stir the pot just for "shits and giggles"
I will also have my other board, I am just currently in a position to get myself a new toy, so time to be a big kid and play on some new tech.
It's ok to stay in the dark ages, but it is also fine to enjoy the new technologies introduced. I say as long as you are enjoying yourself and considerate to others who cares what you use to slide.
A friend of mine hates powder and at 30 still spends his whole time in the park. To me this is boring as I think he might as well just go to a skate park. But each to their own. And he uses a park board soft as hell with a rocker.
If you are fortunate enough then go for it get a quiver as big as you like.
"One board to rule them all" is not every bodies cup of tea.
Thank you all for your comments
And thank you Masque as I have seen in other posts... Very entertaining!

dangly bits, you're not riding hard enough if you can ride with one board for piste and powder. My "DNA" is as good as any, and it's bs to suggest that boarders ever ran with just one board.

lib-banana, I had the second bataleon board ever made, a Hero, still warm from the mould. A good board and interesting concept but you had to edge it ALL the f'n time and on an ice covered cat track it was a dangerous piece of shite if you had traffic and needed to pootle along with the punters. Lovely and stiff though and bloody quick. Very sweet in powder but more of a speedboat feeling than surfing and quite different from a rockered board.
The Jones is a mystery to me . . . but throw one my way?

I bought a Jones Flagship last season. It's so good that I decided I needed to supplement it with a Solution splitboard (which is exactly the same shape). I'd say you'd be welcome to have a ride on it, but the whole cheatiness of the "mellow magnetraction" would probably cause you to have a coronary.
