Flew out of LGW 12/01/13 with Thomson, arrived in resort via a local garage where some of the punters needed a comfort break, on finding that they had to pay 50c to go for a pee decided to not pay and let go on the forecourt
Stayed in the hotel Fliana which me and mate had booked as a substantial upgrade to the hotel Alpina (which was full) unfortunately my friend had suffered a prolapsed disc in his neck so was a solo trip.
Probably the largest room I have ever had the pleasure of staying in on a ski trip but was looking out over the piste and road so was quite noisy at night thanks to hordes of drunken peeps wandering past the front of the hotel at night. Food was haute cuisine but to be honest was small portions, thank god for the salad bar !
Luckily for me Crystal offered 'social skiing' (ski escorting) so the next day hooked up with the rep and was good to meet other skiers of the same or better skill level.
The pistes were in excellent condition all week, only the valley run was icy on the way down and packed with skiers, boarders etc. A great resort for the piste skier so much choice and all of the runs of a decent pitch but the main Ischgl slopes were very busy even considering it was meant to be the quietest week of the season.
Went to Galtur which was a lovely quiet resort on a flat light/snow day, great runs but a bit short and pretty much skied everything, at the end of the day went over to the slow 2man chair and found some great powder on piste. Galtur also struck me as an excellent resort for the kids as lots of interesting things for the kids to do, little runs through the trees, bumps course and a speed check run.
Also skied Kappl some nice long runs but was bitterly cold (-19c) and snowing, so was a shame that the top runs were difficult to see but has great potential for off piste, the powder was knee high on some bits (not that I have figured out how to ski it properly!) and not tracked out either.
Last day spent most of the day on the Alpe Trida area of Ischgl as it was sunny but cold (-15c) and the snow was great, shame about the restaurant on the Swiss side, we all wanted some of their rotisserie chicken (best in the alps apparently) sat down, ordered and waited 1/2 an hour, asked the waiter where it was and the reply was we have run out and then he buggered off, cue another 20min wait for gulasch suppe !! Ended the week on the last lift to ski red 7, which had been shut all week, a lovely run if a tad firm at the bottom.
All in all a great resort, rocking après in the Schatzi bar (now have a liking for gingham, have no idea why ) a good alternative to St Anton and some interesting little resorts only a 10min bus ride away.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

So if you were to go back to the area and had a free choice between there and St Anton, where would you go?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I don't know tbh, Ischgl wins on the amount of piste available (if you don't include lech and zurs) but st anton has better mountain eating and entertaining and some decent ski routes which you can check out on the chair up, I couldn't see the Ischgl ski routes from any of the lifts. I'd say it's a close run between both but think st anton has cheaper choice of accom ( chalets) if going with a TO.

Nice review, shame about the chicken.

The good thing about Ischgl ski routes is they are away from the chairs and so have a real back-country feel - they're mostly easy as these things go.
|
Interesting you think they are mostly easy , I found them a little trickier than the St Anton ones.

Once Kappl get linked to Rendl, I think this will be the most awesomist area going !
red 27, shame I didn't try the routes but just didn't get the opportunity, next time for sure.

2planks - We were, ahem, on the same bus...., at the garage.
The girls have assured me that it wasn't a case of not paying 50c, the attendant would not let them use the loos until we'd bought something.
By the time we'd got the beers, they'd err, 'let go' as you put it.....! Luckily just a 'wee one'!
Had the loo been available on the bus however.... rep said the driver didn't want the hassle of having to empty it. Understandable I suppose!
Fab resort, really enjoyed it. Will go back - as long as the cctv hasn't identified the girls that is.
Had we know you were on your own - you'd have been more than welcome to ski with us. We picked up a couple of waifs and strays (on the bus) to ski with - sometimes 6/7 of us, good skiing and a great time.
Also converts to Gingham Style btw...

T Bar, they were all really skied-out last time I was there, so almost like pistes really... I think that makes them easier. 39 was the one I liked most - a real 'route'. 26 harder, steeper but wide

red 27,
I must say I don't think I have been anywhere where the marked ski routes do not get skied out over time between snowfalls. 39 can be good although generally when I have been that area suffers most from wind scouring and it can get a bit rocky.
In good snow 3a is quiet, away from it all and has a little steeper narrower pitch near the bottom, being a bit lower at the bottom it sometimes suffers in warmer weather.
