Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Manda, Sunlight is necessary. It is well known that lack of sunlight causes rickets. There was a whole generation of children who suffered skeletal deformaties because of the great smogs in London - directly caused by lack of sunlight.
There was recently on the BBC (can't find it right now) a report that parents need to get their children out in the sunlight more because things are heading this way again. Multivitamins etc... are not good enough.

Yes, one incidence of sunburn can cause cancer, but what are the chances? Life is full of risks. Sensible people try to minimise them. Rational people do not get hung up on them.

Thanks. That explains everything.

All I will say is that avoiding all risk carries risk in itself.

rob@rar.org.uk, about you?

Paul Holland, yes. But I didn't anywhere say people needs to stay out of sunlight altogether, did I, so there's no need to get sarky about this.

Just to set the record straight, people living in temperate nations get adequate sunlight levels just from living a standard temperate nations life.

However everyone should become obsessive about protecting their skin from excessive sun exposure. Ski slopes are inherantly excessive sun exposure places (except in a snowstorm snowHead ) and therefore somewhere where you should be obsessive about taking adqueate care to reduce exsposure.

Manda, have you experienced the dermatological benefits of jumping into a lightly frozen pond?

Manda, I was in no way being 'Sarky' about it. You made a statement saying that human beings do not need sunshine. I just tried to counter that.
OK, I did write it quickly because I was running out of time.

I agree that we all have to take care in the sun, but in my opinion your attitude towards people who have made a mistake once or twice and got themselves sunburned is over the top.

I got sunburned. It hurt, I don't have skin cancer.

If I develop it later in life due to this, you have permission to come say I told you so wink

David Goldsmith, yep. "Brrrrrr" doesn't do it justice. Apparently it's wasn't fatal, tho....

Paul Holland, Hmmm. Perhaps I was hasty in stating that humans don't need sunlight per se... (let's not go there, tho).

Re: getting sunburnt and not getting skin cancer as a result -well, yes. But it's a tricky beam you're balancing on there. Casual sex may not necessarily lead to AIDs. But it can do. Wanna play russian roulette?

One person's "over the top" is another culture's normality. I'd love to see the UK develop a similar over-the-topness towards sun exposure. It's getting there but it takes time - and a bit of paternalistic shoving never went amiss.

Manda, you play russian roulette all the time by living. There is no such thing as no risk.

Manda, I understand where you're coming from. I never intentionally get burned. If anything my attitude towards sun exposure is closer to yours than you realise. I'm just not as worried about the consequences as you are.

On summer hols this year I didn't expose my face at all during the week, until I went waterskiing. Within 3 seconds all the sunblock I had on was shotblasted off. Result - burnt face! Very annoying. Twisted Evil

On the other hand, my partner just rubs in a bit of chip fat and then spends all day in full sunshine without burning. What's that all about? Shocked
