Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Another serious knee injury yesterday and another top skier consigned to reconstruction, rehab and the hope of being ready for Sochi. Kjetil Jansrud, Norway's #2 and a top ten candidate in SG, blew his left ACL when he fell in yesterday's race. Jansrud is blaming nobody but himself, and was too upset to face the press yesterday.

Chemmy's FB update

"I really didn't want to write this update but there is no hiding from it anymore. I will not be able to compete in Sunday's World Championship DH - the event i have been looking forward to for months. 2 days ago in training i hit the nets at just over 100kph and cartwheeled. In doing so I have caused excessive stress in the plated fracture in my right leg. I have been recommended by Dr Fink, the guru of Austrian medical practitioners, to rest for a few weeks. This is by no means the end, I have shown my strength before - yes, the timing blows but better now than in a year! On a positive note the big jolt to my leg may help the old injured to further heal so i am likely to come back stronger. Thanks to all my fabulous Canadian Team staff and teammates for the incredible support - see you soon"

Men's DH a couple of hours off. Snowing lightly at the moment, visibility not too bad, can see to top of hill at the moment. Was forecast the odd snow shower but been steady light snow for last couple of hours.

Women's dh not too shabby as well! Some unexpected performances plus loads of spills and thrills. A very icy, fast course - no room for errors. Great stuff - hats off to the ladies for some excellent racing.

Is it me or have the French ski team gone Russian stylee with their race suits? Reminds me of the Russian track suits at the London Olympics - though I have to admit the French don't do gaudy as well as the Russians!!

Anyone know which racers need to qualify for the slalom, is it the non seeded ones or something? I see there are qualification races at Reiteralm, could be worth a watch. http://www.snowsportengland.org.uk/news/2013/01/bss-alpine-update

I also see Dave Ryding as a listed athlete http://www.schladming2013.at/en/sport/athletes/

So there will be one Brit to cheer on. Poor showing really.

Another good win for the shred tonight in the super kombi. Could be on for a triple gold.

Was going to buy tickets for the team event tomorrow but not sure as want to take the kid but heard from friends it was carnage in the cheap zone up on the snow for the men's downhill. Lots of drunks, falling down the slope, bottles flying etc. Sounds like the night race, not a place for child or the elderly. So could buy more expensive tickets in the grandstand or just watch in the town square for free on giant screens.

My only experience of a world cup/championship race has been on TV. If you are in the grandstand how much do you actually see? Looking at the TV coverage in Schladming it looked like the view of the GS races was extremely limited as the course seems to be out of the field of vision for the spectators. Is this a case of experiencing the crowd atmosphere but not seeing the race?

At Kitzbuhel, they have giant screens everywhere. You watch the first part of the race on the screen until they come thru the Hausbergkante then you see them in person. You do have to chose your positions carefully, because yes is alot of alcohol being consumed. But no hassle other than that.

zellmaniac, if you want to see race, then you stay at home. You can see races much much better on tv then in stadium or next to course. But with all these people around, atmosphere is something what is worth experiencing. But you don't see much, except maybe for today's team event.

139 starters for Women's GS tomorrow and 182 for men though the men have a qualification race at reiteralm if I understood the following correctly http://www.kleinezeitung.at/sport/schi/schladming2013/herren/3245645/damen-rekordfeld-bei-wm-139-starterinnen.story

This story is about "jamican mike" and a fella from Hati. http://www.kleinezeitung.at/sport/schi/schladming2013/herren/3245611/buehne-frei-fuer-exoten.story and in english here http://www.fisalpine.com/news/exotic-ski-stars-race-the-alpine-worlds-schladming,2296.html

Do you not need FIS points for men's GS? I could have given it a go as no one else from GB wants to bother, I would have even serviced my skis for the occasion.

It's a disgrace that GB have no representatives in the GS.
When you look at the lists there are 66 Nations their but no Brits.

http://www.fis-ski.com/uk/604/610.html?sector=AL&raceid=71036

Sarah Lewis, Secretary General of the FIS closed the meeting saying, “Welcome to Schladming it a pleasure to see so many of you are able to attend the most important event of the international FIS calendar and enjoy this time together.”

waynos, spud, Ask the people at BSS! They set such a high standard for any GB skier to qualify for the World champs, that if all the other non Alpine nations had adopted it NONE of them would be there. We have 3 male skiers on 20-22 FIS ponints in GS who would have been bibs 50-60.
When TJ is ranked 120 in the World in DH and he still was not selected to race then you can see what I mean.
They don't know what they are doing at BSS with regards to Alpine skiing.

I believe that since the days of 'Eddie the Eagle' BSS do not want to be embarrased by mediocre performances and therefore set the qualifying standards unrealistically high.

As stated perviously in this thread we have many atheletes with less than 50 FIS points. These atheletes should have been considered for the Championships. How are they going to get experience, media exposure and hence greater sponsorship?

Really great race/climax IMHO. Though Tina Maze was looking pretty choked when she offered her congratulations.

Chasseur, au contraire from what I saw! Toofy Grin

Maze's interview on ARD (German TV) between the runs showed that she knew it would mean Worley making a big mistake if she was to stand a chance of the Gold. She also praised Worley's first run. Very gracious about it all and complimentary about Worley's mastering of the course. Of course she wanted Gold - what's the point if you are a contender of only going for a place and hoping it is good enough for a medal?

Looks like the Shred has done the same to Hirscher as well today! Svindels run was truly amazing though - such a big speed specialist on a really tight technical GS and lying in second place at the moment. Only 100th in it between Svindel and Hirscher, so the fight is on for Silver and Bronze only unless Ted makes a complete cock up of his second run.

Samerberg Sue, that may well be...of course, we only get to see what Eurosport show. At the end of the comp, I thought Maze looked "unenthusiastic" or choked. Which would not be entirely surprising given the pressure the girl looks under. Naturally, she wanted to win....!

Looks like Ligety has done it with Moelgg pushing Svindall to 4th.

There weren't many huge surprises. Other than perhaps De Tess in the SG after just squeezing in to the French team. Rolland wasn't too shocking as I think the DH was a bit wide open after LV's exit.

If you had told me before the start of the season that Switzerland would come away from Worlds with a single medal I would have been quite surprised. However, after seeing how the season has gone it isn't too shocking but still disappointing. DC retired, Defago and Suter's best days may be behind them. Janka has just been out of sorts since his health issues. Feuz is sorely missed. Wendy Holdener and Michelle Gisin are great young skiiers but it may be awhile before we see them have the success we've come to expect.
