Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zermatt to Cervinia with luggage?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Is it possible to go from Zermatt to Cervinia with luggage i.e. not on skis but using cablecars only?

Have never been to either resort, so am concerned about viability of this trip and lift closures due to high winds etc.

(We need to get to Aosta valley from Zermatt, and only other option is a 4-hour train and bus trip via Visp and Martigny.)

All comments very welcome!

Comedy Goldsmith, ah, okay - I thought from the piste map it could all be done using cable cars but wasn't sure if I should trust the map!

The lift map shows a 'projekt' to link the top of the Zermatt lift system (Klein Matterhorn) with the top of the Cervinia lift system (Plateau Rosa). It involves the construction of a new cablecar from Plateau Rosa to Klein Matterhorn - a lift link which doesn't exist yet.

Which piste map? There's a new gondola planned for 2016 that may make this possible but it isn't at present. Can't do a helicopter transfer nor skidoos: http://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowTopic-g188098-i858-k5897074-Travel_to_Cervinia_from_Zermatt_NOT_SKIING-Zermatt_Valais_Swiss_Alps.html

Comedy Goldsmith, thanks and very glad you clarified that for me! Will be great when they get that lift link up and running - but a little misleading to have it on the piste map, methinks!

Sideshow_Bob, the piste maps for Zermatt http://www.zermatt.ch/de/page.cfm/pp_matterhorn_glacier_paradise and Cervinia http://www.cervinia.it/pages/SKIRAMA_i_en/443?#ixMainSection both show this 'projekt' link.

Thanks for the Tripadvisor link - most helpful.

Why not ski down with your luggage (Cervinia skiing is easy). I did that once in Austria (though not so far) with a suitcase in each hand. It was actually very easy, to my surprise - though it drew plenty of attention. Obviously you need to keep a still upper body. But make sure the cases are securely locked or strapped up: you don't want them spilling open on the snow.

Not a crazy idea but a fun one.

You wouldn't have to ski too far. All things being well*, I think you'd just have to ski from the top of the Klein Matterhorn lift down to Plateau Rosa.

* the biggest risk is that if the KM lift is shut - as it often is due to high wind - then you have T-bar hell to contend with. Little fun without luggage.
