Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Silverton, Colorado: could budget powder skiers be drowned out by heli skiers?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Allen Best, columnist of Summit Daily News, has some interesting comments about trends at Silverton in Colorado - one of America's legendary 'free spirit' ski mountains. This wild (and many say wonderful) ski area was only brought back to life recently, but has a history of everything up to world ski speed records.

Silverton's operator, Aaron Brill, is detonating avalanches from helicopters to keep his off-piste ticket-holders safe. Allen Best ponders whether he may be tempted to use the same choppers to fly high-rolling skiers to the high peaks ... with all the noise issues - and perhaps 'powder territorial' issues - that can arise from these operations.

Here is Allen Best's column.

Any comments?

David Goldsmith, you do a great job at spotting these ski stories from around the world - keep up the good work!
Allen Best is a good friend of my wife and an excellent writer. But it's difficult to tell whether this is any more than speculation on his part. It would be a shame if Brill started operating heli-skiing, and would open him up to accusations of "selling-out". But then again, allowing a few heli-groups may be the price to pay, to keep Silverton Mtn solvent and open.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There is an interview with Aaron Brill here giving his views on heli-skiing etc at Silverton

Here's a great review of Silverton's rare attractions as a wild ski area: by Daniel Gibson for Free New Mexican.

I skied in Silverton 2 years ago. It has definitely a pioneering/wild west flavour but the vertical drop (accessed by the chairlift plus some hiking) is quite limited compared to off piste in Europe.
