Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Serre Che dining

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My wife and I are going to Serre Che, staying in Monetier next month for our anniversary. She has never been to Europe, and is really excited about the food and culture as well and the snowboarding.

Does anyone has suggestions for good dining while we are there? We have a rental car and can drive to the other villages or take the bus. I am really looking for authentic, family run, type places, not your typical tourist traps. Also, any suggestions for on mountain didng would be great.

Thanks!

a2thak, I'm sure Hells Bells will be along shortly - though she is probably rushing around preparing for her holiday in Monetier as I write. She is the authority on good dining generally (a gourmet and a great cook) and on Monetier in particular!

Serre che is great I'm sure you'll have a fab time. Le cafe du soleil at the top of the luc alphornd run does great stone baked pizza and has a big wide sunny terrace. Also on the mountain but way over near briancon just below the summit of le prorel is a tiny restraunt/cafe half way down the bergers run. It's one of my fav places in world with fantastic views and a great vin chaud. There are a handful of very traditional family run restraunts in villeneuve in the old part of town which are superb, I would imagine monetier will have some greats spots also. Have fun and enjoy the food!

a2thak, In Monetier for a special occasion , try Aquisana and Maison Alliey at the Hotel Alliey or the Hotel Europe. Alliey is probably Le Kawa in the square next to Bar Alpen (crepes, fondue, steaks)and La Brasera Pizza, pasta, great desserts) are also reasonable, friendly and with a good atmosphere . I haven't been out this season yet, but I've heard Le Cairn is under new management (and he should be doing a good job). None of the restos are tourist traps.
Good mountain food at Chez Dam's at Chalet Peyra Juana (rochamout piste), Chalet Pi Mai (Frejus just off Cucumelle), Troll at Serre Ratier and Bercail at Aravet.
In the other villages, there's a couple of good restos in Le Bez which is part of Villeneuve (Pastelli, Auberge Petit Lard and (Villeneuve), and Eau Petit Pont in Villeneuve old village. I haven't eaten in Cghantemerle for a while, but avoid the Station (fish and chips, burgers, etc).

A friend of mine has an apartment in Briancon and until recently we went at least twice a year. There is a great little French restaurant called L'Origan in the town in a courtyard just off the small semi-pedestrianised Rue Centrale. Great steaks / pizza's etc.

a2thak, Although it was 10 years or so ago, Le Peche Gourmand in Briancon offered a very traditional, exceptional gastronomic experience. IIRC, it was once listed in the top 100 restaurants in France! Appreciate that Briancon is at the other end of the valley, but it's not a long drive by car.

I'd also echo Hells Bells', recommendation on Le Troll is Serre Ratier for a lunch stop.

Chalet Pi Mai was the only decent place to eat on the mountain when we were there ( a good 11 years back).

If you are good- try la Grave down the road- Chalet Chancel is fantastic in every way.

I had heard nothing but good reports about the restaurant on the blue Rochamout piste over towards Le Monetier. I'm happy to report that it more than lived up to expectations.

We stayed at 'Le Rif Blanc' in Monetier 4 years ago, on a half-board basis and the food was outstanding (actually we weren't going to be doing half-board but after the meal on the first night we decided to). I think the hotel may have changed hands since then, though. Anyone know what it's like now?

What a shame! We had such a good time there that we were planning to go back to Serre Chevalier some time, even though we weren't bowled over by the ski area, simply because the hotel was a great place to stay. What happened? Why did it close?

J2R, a victim of the recession I believe, either that or being sold for conversion to apartments, depending on who you talk to. It is empty this winter with a 'for rent' sign on it. Hotel Alliey is fabulous, but will be more expensive.

L'Origan changed proprietors about three years ago. Last time we went it was called "les tables".

Does anyone know if the original owners are still in the restaurant business?

Sad! There was no sign of a recession when we were there - the place was full, and the bar was throbbing in the evening. It was owned by a British couple but staffed by some Swedish girls who must have been the perfect employees - personable, hard-working, efficient, friendly.

J2R, that was quite a while ago then. I think a couple of the girls came back for another season.
Couple still have the Alpen bar in the village.

J2R, we weren't in Monetier that much in 2009, as hubby had a serious accident at New Year.
