Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Beginner/intermediate training in Tignes Lavachet

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are off to Tignes Lavachet in a couple of weeks (yay) and have a few beginners with us for the first time in a long time.

Has anyone got good recommendations for ski schools in the area - at least on the first day they are probably not even going to be ready to jump on the lift and ski down into town, but I guess they can walk down there if required.

Money is going to be a factor, so private lessons probably out of the question - plus must speak good English and be able to cope with inappropriate sense of humour. They are our friends, after all Smile

Even better if the same ski school could cope with a few intermediates that might want a couple of sessions at some point during the week but almost certainly won't make their minds up until we get there.

Thanks.

Monium, There's a free lift in Le Lac, that should keep them busy for a couple of days at least. The Development Centre are very good but I don't think they do group lessons for absolute beginners, if there are a few of them a few privates shouldn't cost that much more between them. I'd definitely recommend them for intermediates. I've used Gavin Lewis many times and Rorie Scott once but I think all their instructors are very good and British. Stewart Woodward who is a Snowhead works for the ESF there I think, you could also try him.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We are staying right next to the free Lavachet lift, so they have access to Lavachet and Rosset. The other thing we'd probably need to check with the ski school is whether they can do the first day on these two pistes, as that would save a decent lump of cash for the complete beginners - they can get a 5 day pass instead of 6.

Ive been to Tignes with complete beginners before and a couple of them didn't progress from the free lifts until day 4. Of course it entirely depends upon the individual, some may be ready for the mountain after just a morning on skis, some take a lot longer than that. Worst case I suppose, you could leave it until lunch time of the first day, they surely won't progress up the mountain before that, and then make a decision from there.

I also had two complete beginners come out to see me last season in 3 Valleys; they got going fairly quickly and were getting around the mountain proper from days 2 and 3 (albeit rather slowly.....)

Monium,

So many questions wink Hopefully a few answers Puzzled

1. See link to ESF ski school Tignes le Lac http://www.esf-tignes.org/ski-school-tignes-le-lac/our-school/class-schedule All the info you need should be included somewhere but if you cannot find just post and i will try and find the answer for you.

2. ESF do max 8 people per class and the classes will be in English. Probably a few Dutch in the class.

3. The instructor will advise when a lift pass is required. Normally day 3. The FREE lifts are used untill this time.

4. A couple of lessons for the intermediates should not be a problem.

When are you going? where are you staying?

stewart woodward, we are arriving 13th Jan, staying with Olympic in their chalets in Lavachet. Thanks for the info on lifts - they will be pleased to save a day or two of passes, presumably they aren't going to need more than a Tignes pass for the week, so should be a cheap week.

I am hoping for fairly quick progress for them, so they can get out and around the mountain, but who knows until they hit the snow. Plus just being out on a mountain ona pair of planks is a new enough experience for most.

stewart woodward, might want to tell them to stock up on wine for our week. Hopefully they've been holding back since the start of the season Very Happy

Usually Sunday night is a late one, you're welcome to stick around for a few glasses, that might be the time for the intermediates to sort themselves out.
