Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Boot warmers - good or bad?

 Poster: A snowHead

When I last purchased boots, I was told that boot warmers were a bad idea as they cause the formable inner to deteriorate (or at least to adopt an odd shape overnight). Is there anything in this idea? I have since kept the boots in my room, whereby they seem to be perfectly fine in the morning, but I don't know if this is just one of those claims that is amost impossible to prove / disprove. BTW, I've also used those electric in-boot warmers that look rather disturbingly like anal probes - allegedly!

Ichabod, the small plug in personal boot warmers/driers are fine in most cases, would however avoid the big resort industrial driers found in many hotel boot rooms, you have no idea how hot they get, some may be fine but others to hot and will damage the liner and footbeds in your boots

We too were warned about the boot warmers: we therefore just put our boots on the floor near the warmers and that is enough to get them dry.

The personal heaters and blowers do not get any where near hot enough to cause remolding of your boots

I've used mine for years, its sooo nice to have warm dry boots and gloves every morning. The resort dryers are normally not working or too cold to even dry the boot out

It probably depends... I just had new heat moldable liners fitted and the shop owner was commenting on differences between the different brands of liners. They have an "oven" for heating the liners but said that some liners they just put in for a very short time and some liners can't be put in at all but are warmed for molding just by blowing warm air in them.

Well, CEM sells the "Anal probes" so they cant be that bad. I have 2 sets, one for boots and one for gloves. They work brilliantly

I over-cooked a pair of custom footbeds by leaving the boots on an industrial boot dryer. Didn't happen overnight, but over many weeks. The thermoformable layer sort of bubbled up, leaving wrinkles on the foam top layer of the footbed. I'm a bit more cautious about using high heat commercial boot racks now, and have a small dryer which is good for boots and gloves.
