Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Thorens -> Maurienne Off Piste Action

What with yesterday being a risk 3 day, and an early season snowpack made up of a lot of layers, we decided to opt for safety and head up into the flattish Mont Brequin valley. Finally, climbing by a series of ridges and shoulders we finished at the Col de la Vallee Etroit which overlooks the lac du Loup and les Menuires. This route can be tackled from Val Thorens with about 100 meters of climbing after a long traverse from the Cime de Carron (take a guide/instructor), you can even do it without skins and touring gear.

Return either by touring back up to the col de la Vallee Etroit and then dropping down to the Lac du Loup or via taxi (expensive). A guide might even be able to arrange a heli transfer from St Michel de Maurienne.

We decided not to tackle the final 400 meters to the summit of Mont Brequin. The west facing slopes were pregnant with soft slabs as well as rocks hidden below the surface. The weather was also turning dull. We'd done 1400 meters of track making in deep snow between 2 of us which seemed like enough for the day.

Mont Brequin, so near, and yet really, so far

Home, Sweet Home

Steeper slopes below the col

We finished up with a beer at "Chez Roger" in la Villarette. This is run by a 90 year old. Parties ski down here from the Three Valleys, have a beer with Roger while he calls them a taxi back to resort. Ask the guides or instructors in resort about this.

Merci Pedantica, conditions considerably changed now and not for the better for skiing.

I think I was guided to "Chez Roger" a few years ago. Just a working farmhouse which serves lovely food, then a taxi back to Orelle to get back in to the Trois Vallees? A lovely day's spring skiing. Probably can't tell much from this photo, but this is where we stopped for lunch.
