Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Another Ski Mountaineering Question.

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
All my life I have been going down hill on skis, last year I thought it'd be nice to go uphill for a change and started to hike & ski time to time.

Now I'm keen to start touring/ski mountaineering properly. But on. A budget.

Here's my plan.

I have a pair of K2 silencer twin tips which I got a few years ago. Park stuff never caught on with me but the skis I used allot for off piste as they are a wee bit wider than normal, very light and very manoeuvrable in the variables. Their only short fall was that they were very soft. But I still use them as they are so light and ideal for carrying on a back pack.

As I'v just bought a pair of very nice downhill skis and I'm about to go through the horrors of finding some new boots, I need to do this one on the cheap.

So what I want to do is get some Salomon Guardian bindings to fit to these skis. With the intention of upgrading the ski later, and keeping the bindings.

Is there anything wrong with my theory? And is there a problem with using standard skins on twin tips.

Thanks[/url]

I've toured for years on a pair of Line Darkside Carbon twin-tip park skis with no problem.

The only time when twin-tips are a problem is when you try to stick them in the snow for a belay - and I've never had to do that for real yet.

There should be no problem with skins on twin-tips unles you have particularly awkward clips.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Can probably pick up some Marker Barons for cheaper than the Guardians.

Thanks guys.

I get a good deal from Salomon being an instructor making them nearly as accessible as any for me.

Just to confuse matters I have stumbled across a second hand pair of K2 ascents with fritchi touring bindings that come with skins for about 50 more of my pounds than the guardians alone. What would you do?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Go secondhand. You should be able to find something pretty good. The Guardians are great bindings but probably the worst thing to buy to set out ski touring with. Expensive and heavy, so unless you really want a DIN greater than 12 or can't deal with the 'slop' in some other frame touring bindings I'd not say it's in anyway a sensible future proofing purchase.
